Watchmakers: Is Magnetism Prevalent Now?

Hi Watchmakers, Bas et al,

Is magnetism in mechanical watches prevalent now considering the constant use of mobile phones and laptops?

I am not at all worried with scratches but working with laptops and mobile phones 6-8 hours a day gets me concerned about the cumulative effects of magnets.

Milgauss is calling.

Cheers

I don't know what it was like 10+ years ago so other watchmakers are more qualified than me to answer this.

I don't see a whole lot of watches with magnetism problems though.

I see some when people spend a lot of time work on Mac books while wearing their watch.

Only data I can offer, was on an AP 15400, it was running slightly fast, took it to my Rolex AD (AP ad was 6 hours away) he took it in the back and put it on something that was supposed to demag it, whatever he did get it running within a second or two a day.

He indicated it was fairly common.

Thank for your replies.

I have been spending a significant time with electronic devices so much so that I have become careful that I only use my non watch to operate my laptop and mobile.

I discovered that the disk drive in my Acer laptop was at the front left corner - just the point where my left wrist rests when typing, and possibly why my vintage Omega Seamaster was getting magnetised.

That corner of the PC registered heavily on a magnetic compass.

Solution was to replace it with a SSD anyway.

Demagnetisers are not required these days.

Just park next to a Tesla and walk away slowly.
