Patek discontinues most steel sports watches

It seems Patek is discontinuing and replacing most steel sports watches, new Aquanauts and Nautilus are in gold since a few years.

Smart way to increase the average price point and image of the brand.

What are your thoughts on this ?

I don’t know if this true but I’ve heard that Patek likes to produce a certain minority percentage of their product in steel. Discontinuing some of the Aquanauts and Nautiluses would allow them to use their steel allotment in creative ways along other lines.

I just picked up an annual calendar 4947 on bracelet in steel and I think the 5905 chronograph and the 5935 world time are also examples of this. Maybe we see a Gondolo in steel in the future?

They are probably making way for the Cubitus to give it a real fighting chance, if the line is a bust I expect the SS will come back.

Patek through history has never been much of a SS watch company and I think they want to primarily produce models in precious metals. This is great news for owners of Patek steel watches.

Precious Metal
And
Patek Philippe

That's what Customers expect.

But it's also good for the bottom line, too.

A pragmatic perspective and an accurate one.
Patek no longer needs to attract new buyers to the brand with entry level, 3 hand steel watches.

Exactly. I remember when the 5167A was seen as the "poor mans" Patek for many years.

I wouldn't be surprised if they replace this reference by white gold.

As steel is the metal the least produced, they even have a book dedicated "Patek steel watches".

Higher margin with PM watches, why leave money on the table with steel watches that could be flipped with a huge premium

How do you like the 4947/1A? Contemplating about getting one of these.

TS also said they arent increasing production much but are more focused on increased price per watch. We will see more entry level gold models and complicated sports watches bc the 20K steel time only isnt enough $$$$$

I actually posted about it here:

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=943171

The short answer is that I love it. The dial is very complex depending on the lighting but the most surprising element was the bracelet which is light and articulates very well to the wrist on account of the short link length.
