oxidation on hands question

Hi folks,
I would like to know on which case oxidation on hands could come up?
Is it only from water damage or could it be something else?
I am talking on watches of at least 30 years old not brand new of course.
Thanks a lot for your knowledge and advise, always very helpfull

this is a good question. my dad's 30+ year old 1603 has what looks like rust/oxidation on the seconds hand. i have not plunged the watch underwater, but assuming the crystal is still airtight - this shouldn't happen?

It happens over time. The best thing one can do is make sure seal integrity is entact. Humidity can create problems on vintage watches over time. Some times watchmakers will seal hands to preserve them. The only issue with that is that the hands could darken a slight bit-happens 1 out of 15 watches or so. The slight change can't be seen by visible eye though--only under a loupe. Again-best thing to do is make sure the watch is in good shape--pressure test it and get it serviced by a great watchmaker. I use Bob Ridley and have to say I am quite impressed and pleased with him!!

Moist...I guess moist can enter the watch when the crown is open i.e setting time and date. It dosen´t take much and over 30 years nature will find a way to enter the watch gradually. It gives the watch character if you ask me

Actually moisture is very bad for vintage dials particularly gilts which are a huge portion of value of watch. That is why maintaining seal integrity is so important!

So very spot on.

Even if the watch is never to see water humidity, sometimes called the silent killer can do a lot of damage over time.

Good seals are critical.
