1987 Datejust 16013 - I'm in Love With My New (old) Watch

Picked this up from Beckertime on ebay a couple of weeks ago and had it checked out by a Rolex watchmaker (hope that's the right term) and he said the movement is in "outstanding condition". It feels soo good to wind and I love the soft ticky noise it makes - not tic-tock but you know what I mean. Decided to get a Hirsch leather strap for it after seeing some people recommend them on here.

What do you guys think of this strap? And are there any good nato straps you'd recommend?

i think you best check the strap carefully if its from beckertime, otherwise at a glance the watch looks good. Some stretch in the band but not too bad

Yeah, I was a little disappointed about the stretch in the band but overall it seems very strong and secure. Definitely not perfect, though i appreciate the advice. Have you ordered from them before?

the exact same watch at a rolex AD store in ottawa was over $2,200 more expensive and the only difference was the ban wasnt as worn. Might look into upgrading down the road

Check the band. Becker often uses aftermarket or swapped bands in their auctions

Congrats on your new "old" watch! The venerable Datejust is also the one that started it all for me...mine was a 16014.

That said, I think the Datejust deserves a much nicer strap than the Hirsch... Rough out leather is fine but that Hirsch lacks refinement.

If you're ok with spending a little more for a top notch strap I think you owe it to yourself to have a look at Bulang & Son's offerings.

And honestly, no the Datejust do NOT belong on a NATO...not a two tone Datejust.

According to myself and the Rolex store, the strap appears to be original Rolex as Beckertime said, just some noticeable wear near the lugs.

And thank you! I have been wanting one for almost 5 years now and I was finally able to buy one and absolutely adore it, I don't like the bigger case sizes on them.

Thanks for the tip on the strap, the Hirsch one ran me about $150 CAD so I'm most likely going to put it on one of my Seiko's (Have an SSC513 on the way, hear the Alpinist is a bit underwhelming and they're so expensive right now) and I think I'm going to go for a "rougher & softer" more light colored leather strap, those photos definitely do the watch justice!

The more I wear it, I have to say I agree haha

Might get a nicer leather strap when I want to "dress it down" a little though.

Just like the watch that got me sold on Rolex only I have the silver dial.
Bought mine new in 1981 for $1680 because I was tired of spending $100/year on watches that did not last. Wore it as a tool watch farming. Local jeweler had a Rolex certified watch maker so I would take it in after harvest to get the scratched up crystal polished along with any needed repairs
Wore it 24/7 for 18 years. Had full service done a few years ago. Looks great and still one of my most accurate watches. Always enjoy wearing it.

Had to take some pictures.
Bracelet after 18 years of wear.
Replaced two links next to clasp as the 14k gold was about worn through.

Beautiful! In 1981 did you ever dream it would look like that 37 years later?

No, couldn’t imagine what much of anything would be like in 37 years.
Sure glad it held up so well.
