Thanks...nothing exactly ground breaking from my perspective. But I hope it benefits others that are caught up in the craze.

QUOTE: Keep in mind the outrageously expensive “Paul Newman” Daytona was a terrible seller in its time.

They were still available brand new in the 1980s and early 1990s, ranking amongst the worst sellers in the Rolex line-up. And now the Paul Newmans sell for a lot of money
.

Surely by the early 90's there weren't any brand new PN Daytonas still floating around? His timeline seems a little off there.

Have to agree in the real world its just a tarted up old Daytona with a simple push fit ceramic insert and slightly different dials. Now both of these items can be made in there hundreds at a time by the highly automated Rolex robots. And by the end of the year there will be several thousand of them around, in 5-10 years possible a million of them and all the same except for the dial colour.

The rational side of me knows it's literally the same as a 116520 other than the bezel. I really don't care. I need one.

What I do find a little strange is that you take the time to post your strongly negative opionion of the 116500 in so many threads.

I feel it's just a matter of time before the 116520 gets upgraded to PM style case with the curved lugs and beefier crown guard. Gotta use up the old 116500 blanks first.

lig

There is nothing wrong with someone posting a negative opinion on the same thing on many threads. At the end of the day, his opinion will either be accepted or rejected according to the quality of his arguments.

My own view is that the ceramic Daytona is a damn good watch but the hype is becoming ludicrous.

Yes a few people have overpaid to get one straight away (as is their right) but the simple fact is that they have overpaid in the overall scheme of things.

Finally I would rather read a well constructed sentence expressing a view than the oft quoted - marvellous or congrats etc. The former at least took some effort and the later one word response was just plain lazy.

Regards

Mick

Very sensible advice founded on sound logic.

However, we are dealing here with what is essentially an emotional purchase so I seriously doubt that logic will prevail or that the premium over MSRP will vanish quickly. People will pay top dollar to cut the queue and ADs as well as grey dealers will milk them for all their worth.

There was no "should I use a watch winder thread"!! However as I disagree with Padi on most things his views on the Daytona are pretty accurate. If we take the hysteria out the brag factor it's just a very nice rendition of an existing model. But like Patek changing the Colour of a dial....again!!!

great article. thanks for posting.

I agree that for most watch nerds this is all pretty much a given. For everyone else, this is probably a really super article that provides great insight and info.

Rolex collectors and hobbyists are their own enemies. The amount of hype and hysteria for various almost non-special watches reminds me of the crazy folks lining up at Borders for Harry Potter books. What is worse? The Paul Newman dial craze. It's nice, but demand and pricing for arguably extremely subtle accents is beyond absurd.

Like real-estate, flippers and speculators are making $ plays on these watches. I worry there will be a bubble bursting on all the folks who have over paid for vintage watches.

There is also another way to go here... Have a great relationship like TKerr has with his AD and one will get the best of both worlds ---

be the first to own it, while still paying MSRP..

The Daytona C is a "gotta pay to play" watch. Some people simply love doing that.

The Daytona hits on status and emotions more than any other watch. Nothing brings prices on luxury items up more than emotions and status.

It will surely fade, but never go away. As soon as it's close, the next big thing will be released by Rolex.

In today's " I want it Now" culture , people will pay premium over iphones, sneakers, and watches just to have it Now. That is just how we roll.

Great read. Thanks for posting. I'm one that's waiting. Already sold my TT Daytona. When things calm down, I'm in.

It makes me wonder - if Rolex had released the BLRO in steel instead of white gold, would it have gotten the same excitement and demand as this ceramic daytona?
