Sale Advice

Ive never sold a watch on the web, so looking for some opinions.

I have a buyer that is willing to wire me money and have me send the watch to his friend here in the US.

The buyer is in Europe.

I am selling the watch for less then $1500, not a Rolex.

Sounds fishy to me but being new to this I thought best to get opinions.

I plan to call my banker for his view also but dont want to bother him with something this trivial on a weekend in the current climate.

Thanks

In general IMO, if you're uncomfortable as the seller or buyer.... Probably smart to walk away.

But if the wire lands and finalizes (not ACH etc) in the account... There's basically no recourse for the buying party so it'd be safe for you to ship the watch as agreed upon.

Sounds fishy.

But if you’re desperate to move it, then have the friend send a postal money order. Clearly the buyer is in no rush to get it in hand any time soon.

By having the friend send the money, you have delivered the watch to the person who paid for it.

If you do the deal as structured, the buyer could claim it wasn’t “as described” months later.

This has all the trappings of a headache far greater than $1500. “I didn’t get it” “ my friend didn’t get it.“. “It wasn’t as described“.

Thank you all for the helpful insight.

My gut tells me to walk away, I dont need to move it.
Its been sitting for years and can continue.

The above response made me laugh, as that is exactly how I feel at this point.
Not even worth my effort

Thanks again everyone

I did just what you are talking about with a $3200 watch. I shipped it to his brother in San Francisco, who he was visiting in a few months and would collect the watch then. I had the buyer agree to have his brother inspect the watch for acceptance as I was unwilling to be on the hook for months, to which he agreed. I researched him as a buyer through a work email account and LinkedIN account. It went fine. You just need to come to terms you can both agree with.

Can't you ship the watch to his friend with an 'adult signature required' for acceptance? This way he cant use the "I never received it" excuse. As long as you both agree to T&C and that you're not responsible after delivery etc and ofc, you send it after the transfer is finalised, then I dont see an issue. I would get your banker's view as well, for future transactions.
Seems like the buyer's taking the risk here, not much you. But ofc, if you're not comfortabe, yea, walk away from it.
