First Rolex Watch Buying Suggestion
First time poster. I’m 48 year old man, shopping for my first Rolex watch. I’m looking for classic, timeless, vintage Rolex watch and narrow it down to Oyster Perpetual and Datejust. Which one should buy? I welcome forum feedback.
Thanks |

My vote is for a 5-digit Sub since you like vintage. Can't get anymore timeless than that. Either that or 14270.

Oyster Perpetual is a great everyday watch, but a Datejust is an amazing watch. Fluted Bezel and Jubilee bracelet for the win

I woudl argue that we need more information:
1. What does the rest of the potential collection look like, i.e. what are your other pieces? 2. What's the intended purpose (everyday wear, dressy occasion watch,...) 3. Are you looking for a new watch or 2nd hand? Without any more info and given the choice between the two I'd probably go datejust on Oyster. |

I would start with the datejust. The current watch the DJ41 is really just under 39mm so its classically proportioned. The DJII is 41mm and certainly not built in the vintage classic design parameters. If your wrist doesn't mind a 36mm watch the number of DJ out there to choose from is a lifetime supply. If I wanted something vintage then I would get a precious metal DJ 36mm on a strap. That's classic. I would also consider the turn-o-graph date just, a two tone DJ, and any SS DJ. The current DJ41 is a modern classic, but only metal bracelets are available, and no PM cases in the current model range.

May I again, suggest Explorer, any explorer in fact, vintage or modern. Some may say it is boring but it's true beauty and versatility is unmatchable.

Unless I’m mistaken, he asked for suggestions on either the OP or the DJ. He’s not asking about the Sub or the Explorer or any other Rolex.
My two cents: If you can live without the date, go for the OP, which is a great watch. If you need the date, get the DJ. There is no wrong choice here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Datejust 41, blue dial fluted bezel and oyster band. Impossible to beat for the money.

For a vintage look, I'd go with a 36mm watch. I own an OP 36 but with the double batons at 3-6-9 and arabic numerals on 5 minute markers, it has a bit of a sporty edge.
In your case, I'd go for a 36mm DJ with fluted bezel on jubilee bracelet. Sent from my SM-G973W using Tapatalk |

I'm thinking Rainbow Daytona would be a great starter piece.

If possible, avoid datejust and daytona. GMT and Subs are the safest bet IMHO! I may be wrong but just my 2 cents.

If I had my time over I would go explorer over OP - the OP is a little lost on my wrist. It is just a tad delicate/dressy.

It's really impossible to recommend a good watch for you without knowing more.. How big is your wrist? What clothes do you normally wear? Where do you intend on wearing it? Work? Holiday? Swimming? Etc.
The equivalent would almost be asking what BMW or Mercedes a person should buy :) |

I would rather have an Oyster Perpetual than a Datejust. Just one man's opinion.

I'm in a similar position actually, so currently it's whether an OP36 or a DJ36 comes across my desk first!!
For vintage, I'd err towards the DJ36 because you can get some amazing looking examples. |

Before I buy any watch, I start with: how much time, money, and aggravation will it cost me to maintain this thing? That is to say- you may to consider this before you buy vintage. Modern watches are generally better, more reliable and need less maintenance. In fact while the look of a Rolex has changed little over the years, the tech within has changed.
