I appreciate the thought experiment but keep thinking it through.

I hope you are downsizing your house, eating microwaved meals, and wearing rags to complete the package.

If true empathy and virtue was about hiding, we’d all become gophers. There’s a fine line between empathy and condescension. Yes, condescension also means we cater to others because they are too weak to handle us. The poor are always among us. If this hiding is a sign of virtue in crisis, it should be one without a crisis. ;)

There have always been people in dire straits, long before the pandemic. The key is to recognize and acknowledge them in all times, not just the bad. You're on the right track. Peace.

I am working from home so nobody sees my watches. Granted, I do not wear pants during video meetings which is refreshing.

Two excellent points.
Great advice.

We’re in day 12 of quarantine after relocating to the Midwest from NYC. Definitely not walking anywhere at the moment.

I’ll take over shopping and errands for my parents and grandparents next week. Planning to give blood next Wednesday too.

Not doing something is passive. I think all of us (I'm trying) should find active things we can do to help the situation.

In my case, increasing charitable contributions, making hand sanitizer from ingredients for neighbors, tutoring kids on the web.....I don't hold these out as better than someone else's contributions, only as examples.

Even pre Corona I found myself wearing my AW5 more and more over the Daytona. Yes the Daytona is far more prestigious and a mechanical work of art. Yes the AW5 will be in a landfill in a few years but for me I'm finding the functionality so useful its hard not to wear it. In a way it frees me from my phone as I can glance down to see if I have anything that requires pulling out my phone. Ive changed my routine a lot as have many people and I like keeping track of my activity etc it pushes me a little harder when I go on my walks/jogs etc. I kinda wish I had sold the Daytona when they were hitting almost 30k but at the end of the day its a nice thing I own and appreciate so I plan on keeping it. It's still a bit of a hobby of mine but it's expensive, useless jewelry.

Been trying to pickup the all black Casioak for a few months now. Nowhere to be found. Thought I had read about a March restock but I’m sure that was impacted by current events. eBay prices are crazy with very few shipping from the US

You have to be careful with that. lol. Somebody’s going to ask you to stand up just to check one these times. It happened to me during a WebEx. I always wear pants now. LOL

Ah excellent. In the Midwest you can go for drives and go to the store. I bet you’re glad you hightailed it out of New York City right about now.

I’m doing the same. I have the series 4 and it’s especially useful when working at home. It really helps me keep up with work notifications. After work hours, I usually put on one of my mechanical watches. Best of both worlds, IMHO!

Maybe I'm the jerk, I just bought my first Rolex yesterday. I figure if I'm going to be sitting in the house for the next 30 days I might as well buy the Rolex finally and enjoy it. Fortunately my wife and kids don't feel like I'm rubbing it in their faces.

Nice. In theory since we are at home we can wear both but it just feels uncomfortable and wierd.

OP, ..no need to feel uncomfortable about having a social conscience

I felt slightly uncomfortable accepting a supermarket delivery, wearing a £10,000 trinket on my wrist, from a very young lad working all the hours he could for 'not much money'.

So, yes, I too will be wearing my 'gardening watch', for the time being.

I don’t think it is a useless gesture so much as self preservation, and maybe a change in perspective.

No one is looking at your wrist any more, they are all looking at your mouth to see if you will cough, the guys with grillz must be killing it at the local supermarket right now.

IMO whatever makes you happy, in this case, comfortable is probably a better word. That said, I don’t think anyone is looking at your watches and I don’t think anyone cares unless you’re somehow rubbing it their faces (which obviously isn’t the case here).

It’s a moot point for me since I’m home almost 24/7. Been bringing my kids for walks in the woods and the beach, ONLY if no one is around. So no one is seeing what’s on my wrist anyway.

Even if they see your wrist it will be 6ft away min.
