I owned a 312 that I loved but decided to sell it for a DSSD. I flipped my EXP II polar 4 months after buying it as it got zero wrist time after I got my DSSD. I now long for a Pam 372. I have only the DSSD at the moment and I'm quite content with it being my only watch but still desire to own a Pam again.

I like both brands, but PAM gets way more wrist time & also gets more comments. I've owned Panerai watches for 10 years now & don't seem to ever get tired of them.

Also, I've found myself wasting far less money flipping watches now that I've moved on to flipping PAM straps. Got some beauties now.

Nothing wrong with a lil 372.

Rolex every seconds for me!

Tried to view and understand the Panerai watches and movement...only impressive area is the GMT n 10days power reserv...but best if still with the ROLEX!

i can't understand why anyone would want to pay that much money for some bulky case with no originality with an ETA movement. For the same money you could get a good watch with an in-house movement that don't just satisfy some niche following

You do realize Panerai offers in-house movement models right?

For me, it seems as though everyone in Asia has a Rolex. Despite it's good in house movement, it's as though everyone has a generic product and it makes it feel not special, especially for the price we are paying for one. I turn to Pam's and IWC's because many people don't have one, (Not exactly true, but not as common as having a rolex)
and I know that other collectors who knows their brands could appreciate an IWC or a Pam as well. Just feels more exclusive in simple terms :D

Also, different models gives us a larger variety of what we could wear during certain occasions. I used to use my Sub as my daily beater, but I'm starting to use a Pam now because of the leather strap and just the "feel" it gives me of wearing one. Takes away the seriousness from a stainless rolex braclet for me. :D

Agreed. It's like those 'old vs. new model' threads. Some people like Panerai, some people like Rolex, some people like both...

That "no originality", as you put it, is their design. That design is iconic in the watch world and it isn't disputed. Its like bashing an oyster case for remaining an oyster case some decades later. Either you like it or not, Panerai isn't hurting for customers.

Everybody thinks they have taste too but we all know how true that is.

Yes, right. For the thread to move forward it would have to enlighten everyone to the OT's original question. One that many have answered very well. I have yet to hear why the thread started thinks that liking Rolex would prevent someone from liking Panerai as well. It was a poorly thought out question in my opinion.

This thread will not move forward when you get people who do not know what they are talking about chime in like the commenter above, jsharp.

The only panerais that i like are the radimors. I like them because they dont have the crown guard mechanism that the regular panerais have. Their also a bit smaller than the regular panerais which i also like.

^^I find my tastes are the opposite. The Luminor crown guard is the single most characteristic element of Panerai. I like many Radiomirs dials and cases, but I do not much care for the "hobnail" crown.

Crown guard vs. rad crown

I agree with you 100% on the radiomir crown -being the least desirable feature of Panerai's.
I venture to say that this is one of the reasons that the "1940" is being introduced...because it looks to have a smoother and tighter crown. It is my guess and hope that more of these 1940's will be produced in the future.
I would further add that the crown guard makes any luminor sized panerai tolerable if not downright comfortable- while some larger and thinner fitting radiomirs 'poke' my wrist -just my personal experience as I wear my watches rather loose.
Best,
palmasea

I have a GMTIIC and a PAM 233 and like both. They're great watches that get worn on different occassions for different reasons. If you don't like Panerai why bother posting on a Panerai forum - you're not going to change anyone's opinion here.

Beautiful photo Martin! That 372 looks gorgeous!

I must admit, my 112 is quite hideous. High-fives everyone and to each their own. Next watch will be a 14060.

Haha funny topic. I actually NEVER wanted to own a Rolex and was first drawn into the watch world by Panerai.

Panerai and Rolex do share a linage in their earlier years and the vintage stuff from both Panerai and Rolex are the most fun to collect with the biggest following.

Also like Rolex, Panerai holds its values rather well, which adds to the addiction and ability to swap in and out of different watches.

Love them both but Panerai > Rolex for me... just look at my name!
