Thought it would go for a little more. Some even thought it could beat the 17 m PN

Jack Nicklaus' Rolex Day-Date did sell for $1 Million ($1.2 Million including the buyers premium).

Within the hour, Marlon Brando's 'Apocalypse Now' GMT beat it at $1.6 Million ($1,952,000 including the buyers premium).

This is about as much as I predicted and I did expect the GMT to trump the DD.

I was surprised that the gold omega Speedmaster sold for so little.

I think it sold for less than the msrp of the new gold Speedmaster

Wow! These numbers can’t be what they expected. It’s light. Really light.

I thought Jack would get $3m min and Marlon $5m

I’m no expert but when they say far north of six, they multiply by a lot.

The fact that so called “experts” only a day or two ago were predicting Jack’s watch to beat the Paul Newman watch is honestly laughable. It went for a lot less than I expected but to think it would reach up to $15m?

I too think these numbers are a bit light. Jack’s watch is a steal at 1MM.

I think these numbers were high, even though they were less than many predicted. Paul Newman Daytona aside (the nicknamesake of one of the most popular watches), I don’t quite understand the appeal to collectors. Unless you happen to be a huge golf, Nicklaus, and Rolex fan...what exactly is the appeal or significance of his watch?!
I understand he wore it for decades, but he isn’t a collector, and there is no real connection to Rolex history, nor is it rare.

Went for less than I expected - given the price of Newman's Daytona. Then, what do I know!

Agree, I thought they would fetch a few million, maybe this auction is 6 months too late to cash in on the hype and too distant from the PN auction, you need at least two FOMO bidders going at it, not cool rationality.

It was funny to watch the auctioneer getting a bit shirty over $10k increments, $10k is a lot of money and kind of annoyed me a bit when he was talking down to the staff (and by proxy the bidders) over the ‘small’ sums.

The fact that they were at a point and ‘only’ going up $10k at a time shows that nobody valued it where the auction house did, it was at the limit the two people who wanted it were willing to pay.

Hmmm. Nothing against Jack Nicklaus, and I would have hoped for charity that it would fetch more, but perhaps every A list or B list celeb will no longer think their association with a watch adds so much to the value of the watch.

I would rather have my fathers watch over that of a celebrity.

But what if your fathers watch was first that of a celebrity? So Brando then your father's then yours then your child's?

The price realized on Jack's watch has to be incredibly disappointing. 1) it was for charity; 2) it is the watch worn by the greatest golfer who ever lived for the last 50 years while he won Major after Major. there are a lot of rich golf fanatics and rich rolex collectors. that combination shouldve brought major coin. it didnt. i read that people were telling Jack that they expected it to go for close, if not more than, 8 figures.

If I'm Jack I buy the watch back. I wonder if he had known the final price, if he wouldn't have even put it up for auction and just donated $1MM himself.

are you asking if i would lead with, the watch belonged to a celebrity vs sharing that the watch was my fathers, marking special family occasions?

what would you do?
