In my view the strap turns any Nautilus into a pretty ugly piece - I just couldn't wear it, no offense intended of course. For me either a Calatrava on strap (or Aquanaut on rubber) or a Nautilus on bracelet, but nothing in between. Interest in the strap versions seems driven by availability, just like in your case, and will likely disappear again if the bubble deflates just a little. The only strap piece w a true following might be the 5980R as some people find the /1R too heavy.

LOL, but remember steel is steel. even my spoon and fork is steel. I personally prefer the nautilus gold with strap. since it is good for casual and everyday use.

It's a beautiful piece, came very close to buying one, as I was trying one on my dealer asked if I wanted to try on an original 5711P and after I did my mind went elsewhere for a while.

I’ll add this. The rose gold I would pay a premium above list for. The steel I wouldn’t pay a dime over list. Sorry to sound bougie but Steel just seems so entry level and in my mind I can’t justify paying extra for the lightweight. Oh and I would try it on if possible. It’s so light it’s weird.

Do the “some people” u speak of find the 1/r too heavy or too expensive and hard to get so they’re justifying it with the strap version?? IMHO The 5980 on strap is ugly af. It’s way too sporty to be on a strap. No offense intended of course but steel watches to me are like a 3 series or a C class, in other words: Entry level. The 5712R is the only nautilus worthy of an elegant croc strap with that beautiful moonphase. Im not a fan of the Calatrava or the Aquanaut either. I have the 5980/1r and the 5712R and the only other watch I would get is the 5270P and maybe a 5711 on steel if they offer it at list so I can wear it when I’m slummin it. I wouldn’t pay a dime over list for a steel watch tho.

I absolutely love my 5712R. The complications are wonderful and it’s a very legible and versatile watch. The strap is extremely comfortable to me. I included a pic with a yellow strap :)

Steel. If you want RG, go 5711

I’m more of a SS guy, but I love the look of the rose gold on this.

Too each their own I guess. I tend to prefer subtle and minimal designs and I don't mind sporting kit considered entry level like my 3998P or 5711 blue.

As I said it was about the weight of the 5980/1R. People here found their 1R very heavy and at least one of them has since added the strap version. It would be quite silly to compromise for the strap just for the 1R being too expensive as they are so different. Neither is for me I am afraid as I don't like the pushers on the Nautilus case. Like you I'd very much prefer the /1R between the two though.

That's a tricky question.

I really love the 5712r and it's been sort of a grail for me, the combination of rose gold and that dial is absolutely stunning. It would have been my choice given at least one SS bracelet watch in the collection.
In a perfect world I'd probably pair a 5712r with a 5711a white dial and call it a day. Perhaps a 5164a for travel use.

However, in a reality where at the moment I can only get one Nautilus at list, I'd have to say 5712a and take the rose-sports itch out with a 5164r (though I'd probably still do 5164a for it's discreteness while traveling and leave the rose for dressier pieces)

perfect combo is 116500 white face for daily wear (takes a lot more bashing than any nautilus) + 5712r.

How do I know? :)

The one thing that the 5712a has got in my opinion is the general wear comfort, combined to a relatively light weight and a beautiful dial. But overall the 5712r in real life feels more special. At least that was the conclusion i came to when i took the plunge 4 years or so ago with both versions in hand.
