This is taken from today's UK Daily Mail.
With the rise of smartdevises (phones, watches, ...), an increasing amount of young people become unable to tell the time from traditional watches...
What do think of that?
What's the future of the traditional watches we love?

Not sure it will affect the future of watches. I can however vouch for the fact that many schools do not focus on teaching time telling on traditional devices.

A friend's kids had no clue how to tell time on an analogue clock a few years ago. I suspect they haven't learned yet . . . .

That’s an interesting subject because, I look at an analog dial as a position in time indicator. If I have a meeting at two, the minute hand shows me how close I am to that time. I can read a number off of a digital dial but my mind has to go through an extra step to tell me what it means. Aircraft manufacturers did lots of studies on analog versus digital dials, so many instruments still use analog readout, because a quick glance tells you how close you are to a problem.

I can read digital displays the quickest.

But I think I’m just faster at processing numbers and letters than shapes (made from the hands on the dial)

Of course they don't know how to tell proper analog time any more; it isn't taught in most schools any more.

They don't know how to write or read cursive either.

With all the digital times, people just forget to teach kids how to read on a dial.

Not the only thing that is changing. Fewer young people are reading, if they "read" books they are audiobooks. This affects the way people's brain wire themselves and affects the way they think. If people start learning via videos and audiobooks, how will they do on tests like IQ tests and college entrance exams? And how will they be able to think critically like in law school?

Here 'Down Under' the standard of basic Math is also atrocious due in part to the cessation of teaching multiplication tables decades ago.
My basic Math is much better than either of my adult children and neither of them is stupid.

Should we not bother learning to count because we have calculators? Or stop learning to spell because we have spellcheck and auto correct? We don't NEED to tell time on analog clocks or watches, but it increases cerebration...and I'm all for that. Personally, I judge passing time better with an analog watch/clock.

Decades ago McDonalds put pictures on their registers and long ago everything was barcoded.

Have you seen any young people do simple addition without their phone lately? Most have trouble even with their phone.

Something as basic as telling the time should be taught by the parents before the children even reach school age. My parents did, as I also did for my children.

Correct, i think its a parental responsibility. Same as starting to learn the very basics of reading and writing prior to attending school. School should be seen as an addition to a child's education.

Sadly though it is not by a lot of parents. Who basically treat school as free and convenient childcare.

Even if it's true, it's not much of a deal because it's such an easy thing to learn.
After all, that you haven't learned something, doesn't mean you can't.
For instance, I never learned to use an abacus, but if the day ever came when I felt compelled to, pretty sure it wouldn't take long.

I don’t know about analog watches, but yesterday I gave a cashier in her 20s a $50 bill plus 43 cents on a $37.43 purchase and it took a long time plus my assistance to figure out the change. Even before she entered the amount I gave her on the register, I had to explain why I gave her the amount I did.

My thoughts - it is our duty to teach our kids essential things like this. At the end of the day, if a child doesn't know how to read a clock, I place blame squarely on the parents' shoulders.

Yes - it’s up to parents IMHO. This could be taught prior to pre-school. Just a question of parenting priorities.

But remember, your kids prolly can’t read a sundial. Some old skills aren’t that important except to historians.

But even people who can read an analog dial sometimes need help to know what info is important.
