When will AP update the Royal Oak 15400?

Now that that 15400 has been out for about 6 years, what are the chances that AP will update the Royal Oak soon? Perhaps at Basel 2018?

I would say 0% chance since they just launched the 2018 models at SIHH and don’t participate in Basel.

There isn’t much they can really update. 3120 movement is a staple and 41mm size isn’t going anywhere. I could see more metal/ceramic variations and dial colors but not a new version anytime soon.

Curious to know why you think 41mm is not going anywhere - would AP ever downsize the size of RO? Seems like people generally like 39mm on the 15300 more, but maybe this forum is not a good demographic pool

Downsizing the 15400 to 39 pushes up against the 15202. At that point more people will opt for downsized 15400 since it’s like 25% cheaper with a seconds hand and quick set on the date. Only thing 15202 would have is ultra thin complication.

The 15300 came out in 2005 and discontinued in 2012 for a total run of about 7 years. The 15400 is approaching 6 years with a very minor refresh with the dial and clasp in 2015 (3rd year of the product run). I suspect it will take another two to three years before the replacement model (“15500”??? ;) ) comes out because of the success of the 15400 and the reduction of production.

Watches tend to be a bit more resilient than other consumer products. People tend to like “vintage” and “new vintage or rare”. If there were any changes it would also be minor.

I don’t really see the size changing either. They have a good range right now with a 37mm, 39mm, and a 41mm. They probably won’t canobilize their own sales of the Jumbo by reducing the size of the quote on quote “entry level” AP.

I think the overall market perception of the 41mm RO is very favourible. Us watch enthusiasts favor the traditional size, but the general market does like the larger option. I also think that 39mm and 15300 is more popular now because there is always a human tendency of wanting something that isn’t available (or readily available). If they discontinued the 41mm and went back to the 39mm, I think people will deviate to the 41mm and say how rare and “cool” the larger size was.

With that being said, how much more will the price increase for the white, grey, and black dials? They have increased in value 3-4K in the past year. Blue is already at 19K.

Good points. I didn't realize 15400 sales were strong. Does AP or other sources provide sales stats?

My guess is SIHH 2019 or 2020, as that would give the 15400 about the same lifespan as the 15300.

If Rolex do shave the lugs of the 40mms making them wear smaller then this might signal a change in trend size, and possible AP could follow suit with a 40mm as well as we know the 41 wears bigger.

I would agree if that's true but it looks like even Rolex is staying big (or going bigger) - see sea dweller and datejust 41.

Well DJ41 and DD40 are considerably smaller in feel than previous models but yes, Basel will be telling.

Nah. The 15300 just fits most people better whether they like to admit it or not.

This.

The 15300 and Jumbo co-existed for a good while, so there is precedent for AP to have both 39mm ROs in the line-up at the same time.

I can't wear the 41mm and the 37mm is too small. I'd be first in line for a 15300 "reborn."

What are the chances of AP actually making the standard Royal Oak (successor to 15400) smaller in the next iteration?

Why are we even talking about downsizing the watch?? think about this there is every reasonable size available ))) you can't get 37 or 39 mm submariners. I'm glad they have 41mm option as the 39mm looks too small on my wrist. Also keep in mind that 42mm is becoming the new 40mm if not every single than most watch companies out there are coming up with 42mm options, IWC, Rolex, JLC just to name a few.

Nice first post.

You do realize a 39mm Royal Oak wears like a 41? Also, nobody was really ‘talking’ in this thread for over two months until you bumped it.

Cheers

I also don't really see the need to update the 15400. There already are 15450, 15202 and 15400 variants. Cutting 1 mm and making it to 40mm doesn't really make much sense IMHO.

The issue for me is the balance is slightly off on the 41mm and it wears a little wide, bit like the Exp2, so knocking 1mm off may make that difference. I have no objection to the actual size as AP is no shrinking violet brand and agree that a 41mm size is a good position to hold in the RO line up.

Other brands did it, it could very possibly happen! On another note, do you guys think it would be redundant to have an AP 15400 and ROO 42 mm in the same collection?

If it is updated I doubt we’ll see it going back down the 39mm, AP have only just finished removing the 39mm versions across the RO models with the exceptional of the Extra-thin.

They appear to like the ideal of a 37mm and 41mm covering the bases.
