The James Cameron is the black dial.

Now watch me get flamed by everyone! LOL.
No flaming here

That's exactly what I've thought too!

I do love and appreciate the D-Blue, it commemorates an incredible feat of human engineering, bravery and exploration - but I do, personally, prefer the timelessness (excuse the pun!) of the black dial.

The graduated blue dial, and that lovely green Deep Sea font (matching the sub paint) is ace - but it doesn't look 'the business' to me. It just seems a bit too casual. It's a bit 'Jeans and T-Shirt'.

The black dial is understated, versatile and clean. That's not to say I wouldn't have the D-Blue if I could, I just wouldn't have it instead.

I've had my DSSD for about 6 months or so now, and I'm going through a new love affair for it.. the way that ceramic bezel shines, the purity of the black dial, the clarity of the dial fonts. It all works together beautifully.

It's a chunky, manly, hyper-engineered behemoth. But not that much so! My previous watch was a Planet Ocean Chronograph and that was even bigger.

And man... that Glidelock! I wore my PO for a couple of days instead last week and woah... did I ever miss that Glidelock. Being able to bespoke-fit your watch bracelet when it's 32ºC outside and your wrist has expanded is priceless (well it's not priceless; it's about 8 grand - but you get the point).

A lot of bad things are said; the dial is too cluttered, we don't need 'ring lock system' and 'original gas escape value' on the rehaut ring, it's too tall, the bracelet isn't tapered right, no one needs to dive 3,900m - but, the DSSD black dial is my watch and I love it.

For now...

Bought the original DSSD when it came out and then wondered about trading it for the D Blue. Well, my wife said something that made sense..." your collection has a ton of black dials, you need a variety!" With that I called David and added the D blue and haven't looked back.

I went back and forth with the dial question in the DSSD-Blue and the DSSD. In the end I could not pay the premium for the dial difference. In the time I was considering the DSSD-Blue the SD43 was introduced. I have owned two DSSD before and always like the watch but with the slightly smaller case, red font and larger bracelet I went SD43. I will say that the prices on the DSSD-Blue are constant so I don't believe you will lose much on a trade or a sale should it not work. I believe though that there is enough money difference between the Blue and the standard DSSD that you could buy a Tudor or Omega with what you save. I would go black dial.

It certainly looks like it.
As I have said on this forum before, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually got the very first one made given to him by Rolex.

In the movie he obviously wears a Black dial DSSD.
Prior to that he has had quite a long history with a Sub.

I wonder what else he has in his collection?

My AD never charges a premium for anything and I almost always get a discount, depending on the piece. The DSSD Blue Is a few hundred $ over the black and it appeals to me. So I bought it.

It's just a watch. So much emotional vesting in what color Cameron had or was, and the lettering, blah blah. How much is it worth? If you like it and are so inclined, buy it. Inanimate objects don't have "DNA."

It's all Emperor's New Clothes stuff. Maybe this is the definition of covéfé. I added the accents to make the word more cosmopolitan.

Bought my Deepsea in 2011 before a deployment to Latin America. Love it to this day. If I had a choice back then, it is quite possible I would've chosen the blue dial. No regrets whatsoever.

I love the photos of the deep blue, but prefer the DSSD on my wrist when I've tried it on

If I didn't already own a "regular" Deep Sea I'd definitely consider the Deep Blue. I don't think it is worth thousands more over the cost of a gently used DDSD with a black face, but rational behavior often doesn't enter in to these decisions. If you like it and can afford to buy it, then go for it. You will be unhappy if you settle.

DSSD vs Deep Blue?

I got my DSSD new from an AD in 2008 for under $8k. Crazy to see how much prices have risen and the premium on the blue.

in theory I like both, but in practice I don't think I'd buy either. I love the photos of the deep blue, but juts don't feel it works with a suit. I like the black DSSD a lot...but not as much as I like the SD43.

If I had a black DSSD, I don't think I'd switch to the deep blue - particularly given the price difference that lightly used models command

Interesting thread and good to see others saying "I wouldn't pay the premium uk dealers are asking". Quite right as some of them are ridiculous in all honesty with their window prices on Rolex.

I paid retail for mine, £8,250, and scored £1,138 tax refund when I left the UK to come back to Singapore.

It's worth every penny.

Well - I have both - the SD43 and D-Blue
Both are totally different and wear totally different.

The SD43 of course is perfect as a daily watch but I do respect and love the Deepsea Blue - it's outstanding.

Prefer the DeepSea Blue since the dial is basically black except under strong light. Don't let the pictures fool you ... its mostly appears black.

I got duped by all the hype that the blue was going to be discontinued and so bought one ( above retail here in the U.K.). Personally I think the original is a better looking watch.

When you spend thousands of dollars on a watch, you want to be completely happy with it every time you gaze down at your wrist. So, if you prefer the blue face over the black, it is worth every penny to pay the premium for it. Always get the watch you truly want. If you buy the black simply to save $$$ you'll be second guessing yourself forever.
