May Have to Move Up Rolex Plan for Son
Was going to wait until the settling of my estate on my passing; however, seems as if the wife wants to move up the timing of our oldest son's getting his Rolex.
This May he graduates from a T14 law school, which he accomplished entirely on his own merits, sweat, and money. This is after doing the same for his MBA and BS. He is taking a Big Law position in NYC. We rarely see much of him these days and haven't for many years, so the wife thinks it might be a better thing to take care of now. Now I just have to figure out how to do it. |

Will give you much more joy to give it to him now and watch him enjoy it than to wait until your passing. Congrats btw.

I would look at a Daytona. Not too sporty not too dressy and fits under a cuff nicely.

Does that mean that you get to buy a replacement one for yourself?

Sounds like you dont get to spend enough time with your son! Shave a few $ off the price tag and go on a nice trip with him to celebrate

So are you passing down your personal watch or buying him a new one? Seemed like you were passing down, but there's been suggestions for specific watches so I wasn't sure.

Under this scenario, my youngest son would get my Sub, although I probably wouldn't keep it forever under this scenario. Then, I would get my replacement. |

It's a GREAT idea if your son has sentimentality and appreciates watches like you do. If not, brace yourself that your prized possession will likely sit in a drawer except on the rare occasion when the two of you see each other.

Your wife, of course, has the right idea and it appears that you have now come around to her way of thinking. I also agree that his law school graduation would present the perfect opportunity to gift him a Rolex.
I'd like to see the look on both of your faces when that happens. Best of luck to your family and congratulations. |

Having just recently gone through this process with my son, I am excited for the emotions you are about to experience.
If he doesn't already know your plan, have a camera around to capture the shocked look on his face. It will be memorable, to say the least. Congrats |

There is no valuable time than time spent with your son. The memories will last forever with him, and the watch will mean much much more if you take the time and occasion to give to him.
Once time passed, you cannot get it back. Do it and don't wait...:)

(Coming from someone who is about to graduate university) I think if it were me, and I received a gift off my father that held such sentimental vale I would love to receive it off them. It would make me realise how important the watch is to my father and would always remember receiving it!
Maybe take him for a nice lunch before he graduates and make it feel special; it would hold more sentimental vale then and he would then have it for the graduation ceremony. You would also get a really nice pic of him at the ceremony wearing it to put up in your house! Congrats to your son by the way, he has done incredibly well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Not sure from your post if this might be a financial strain on you now, if so you can wait, he's in Big Law now and can buy his own soon enough.

better sooner than later
I bought my first Rolex on my own a Sub C back when I was 18 in the early 90s so it gives you an idea of my age. Just picked up a GMT Master ll in August. When I found out I had my first heart attack this November I decided to pick up a new Sub C still trying to get one as we're very low in stock in Canada right now thanks to a little bit of corporate greed in my opinion. Non the less the morrow is life is cruel at times and beautiful other times. Seize the moments you have now and get him it the sooner then later. Many congratulations to him and you as well. I hope he wears it in good health...

Me and my wife are snowbirds. We live in Florida in the winter and Wisconsin in the summer. My 2 boys are up in the mid west. They both recently finished College and we didnt do anything big for there graduation (other than fund it all). So I got the idea a year or so back to get them both something to enjoy and remember the occasion. A Rolex was my first thought since watches are one of my passions.
I have owned 8 Rolexs in my life. They never have had one yet and may have never bought one in the future due to tight finances and just starting out in life. So me and my wife are in a good position and I have been working and saving some extra and I have secured 2 GMTIIC's for them both. I am a retired Aviator so the GMT was a natural. When we get back up North in May we will surprise them and then they will have a common bond with Dad and Mom. Hopefully a memory similar to yours in the future is in the making. |

It's always a tough debate which is the right move. Pass a watch down that you have owned and worn, or go for a new one. I don't think you can go wrong with either scenario. It sounds like you have a good plan and I'm sure you son will LOVE the gift! It is very nice to be able to see him enjoy it too!

I think you should give your rolex to him now, this would make him happier. You'll get a new one if you miss yours so much later on.
As for how to do it: find a tissot or seiko box (maybe a box of even cheaper brand but this might ruin the surprise as he can get suspicious), put the rolex in it an surprise him. This would be a memorable one. Your wife might take a video of this moment too. |

I would get him his own Rolex (like Jim smyth is doing for his sons) and simply give it to him in person to congratulate/commemorate his graduation and all his accomplishment thus far.
Unless u have a big collection, passing down ur own personal watch, imho, should be done after/near death.
