Incoming: Wow. Color me impressed as a non-believer...SS Black Dial SkyDweller

This is a funny incoming thread, one I had no idea I'd be writing.

Here goes:

I purchase solely through trusted sellers here on TRF, with only a couple one-off purchases from some different ADs years ago. So basically no relationship with any AD.

Since Basel 2016, I had walked into more ADs than I can count on my fingers and toes to jokingly ask about the SS DaytonaC when the SA would ask if I'm looking for anything in particular, only of course to be shown the door, laughed at, and/or told that the waiting list would be 5-10 years as the watch is made of unobtanium. My father joked that I must some sort of masochist enjoying this pain when I knew what the answer would be before walking in through an ADs doors.

Anyways, for the SS Daytona I picked it up last both after finally just paying the premium to a trusted seller here, which was so worth it (in my own opinion). Had a great trip with my old man to commemorate the watch in LA and it all worked out for me in the end.

----

A couple days ago, I walk into a local AD without saying a word this time, as I have my SS DaytonaC so I'm good. The SA unprompted asks me if I'm interested in a black dial SS SkyDweller that just came in, the AD's first one. I politely say no thanks without thinking twice, and walk out 30 seconds later.

5 minutes elapse, and I start thinking to myself: what the hell are you doing? You spent over a year getting pooped on for an SS Daytona and now the SS SkyDweller is being handed to you on a silver platter and you didn't even look? Needless to say, as the AD was closing, I run back to the AD and tell the SA: let's take a look.

I did not like any of the PM SkyDwellers and I actually didn't think I would even like the SS version, as I really don't like watches bigger than my Daytona for my 6.5" wrists. But I figured, what the hell, let's take a look.

I. Was. Blown. Away. I was a non-believer, and as soon as I saw the SkyDweller in person, I picked it up without even thinking about it and if I would wear it just on how beautiful the watch was. The watch is a stunner, and I thought to myself that even IF I wanted a SS SkyDweller, I'd want the blue dial. I stand corrected. The black dial is the one to have in my opinion, the black is a shimmering, radiant black that almost turns to a rhodium grey based in the lighting that is truly unique and breathtaking in different lighting. I love that black dial, even more than the flat gloss black of my DaytonaC.

So anyways, paid cash and picked it up in a 5 minute span. I saw it in the flesh for 30 seconds before my wallet was coming out

I'm not even sure what I'll do with the watch yet!! Just had to have it. I actually put the warranty card in my father's name as he was very interested in the SS SkyDwellers when they came out so I might give it to him and make him pay me for some of the watch at least, we'll see.

But honestly, even though it's still in it's BNIB condition in the box, I can't help but open the box and stare at it daily because it really is a great looking watch. I love, love, love the black dial.

Just thought I'd write this up as a lesson that I thought I would not be a fan of the SS SkyDweller and knocked on it, but once I saw it in person it was completely different. The movement, the elegance of the watch in SS is understated with the right about of "pizazz" I guess for lack of a better word. The SS dials (again in my opinion) are way nicer and elegant than the PM versions. I still wish the watch was 40mm personally as then it would be de-stickered and on my wrist right now, but I think I'll give it to my dad as his wrists are a bit bigger than mine and he really loves the movement. Thought I'd include shots in different lighting and with the flat black dial of the Daytona to help others who are deciding between dials for their SS SkyDweller.

Wow!!! An awesome watch, congrats to everyone else who owns one and is enjoying theirs. I finally understand the hype after seeing it in person, it's a special watch.

Good for you! Great story. Thanks for sharing. And I don't think it's too big of a piece for your wrist.

I'm 6.5 in. diameter you judge; it works for me. In person it seems even more fitting.

Fantastic story! I really like that black. Totally changes it as I am in the same mindset as you about the PM ones.

That would be a great gift for your father. You rock!

Hehe thanks all for the kind words, figured you guys would enjoy the story! Hope it was helpful too for those on the fence about it, or to sway the fellow non-believers. Also wanted to highlight that to my surprise the black dial is not a flat black. The blue dial has a lot of well-deserved hype, but the black dial is just sinister and stunning IMO.

Honestly it all just depends on personal taste in my opinion. For me, I try to be more reserved and understated just as a person, so it's a bit big or has too much presence on my wrist (for now). The Daytona really is the sweet spot for me for size at 39.5mm, whereas many find the Daytona to be too small. But I agree that I could pull off the SkyD if I wanted to. I also have a bit of a thinner build (for anyone who cares, 6 feet 175lbs) so I think that also impacts how the watch appears on your wrist (not just wrist size).

I think the best thing to do is to visit a local AD and try on a WG model (my dad is in SF and doing that today as well), but I've heard that the WG for whatever reason still wears differently than the SS version, but likely just due to the dials. The SS dials really are amazing.

Agree, the Daytona is the absolute best size for my wrist. I tried om a PM sky and dismissed it. These posts making me magically wanna think that a change to ss shrinks it, which of course is doubtful

Ahh, gorgeous Platona. We are in the same boat for wrist size and preference. I will say though - the SkyDweller size was less of a factor, or less of an issue, for me after trying it on, especially case width and height which was surprising. For whatever reason, I was expecting it to feel like a DSSD, SD43, or even YMII (which obviously it wouldn't with the SkyD being 42mm). It was the thickness more than anything that was the most noticeable. If you have the opportunity and the interest, for sure try it on if you can.

Congrats on the SS SkyD. I tried on all three dial colors at a Basel event and I prefer the black dial. Blue and while are stunners too, but the black is nicer. It's like a sunburst dial in black and so much different then the black dials on other models.
