Talking with the watchmaker at my AD - PREDICTION!

You heard it here first! Without a doubt! It's for sure!!!! That... someone I know thinks something will happen at basel 2018!!!!!!

Ahem... speaking with a knowledgeable watchmaker at my AD, also a great guy, he and I were talking and he suggest/think/predicts that the 3186 will be replaced in 2018. He said the movement has been around a while, and with all the new improvements in the 3200 series (like my 3235 DJ41 ) Rolex will update the GMT out of the 3100 in to 32... something. Heck, I'll predict it's the 3274! Anyway, it kind of makes sense, the 3186 has been powering the GMTs and older Explorers for many years... Time for an upgrade?

Yes there are some differences in the 32 series movements but they are still all based on the old cal 3035/3135/3185.The most important is at last the change to a ball bearing rotor. And to some another plus feature adding a longer mainspring and making the spring-barrel thinner for more power-reserve.Now will the 32 series be better more accurate or long lasting than the 31 series, well only time will tell on that one but IMHO its doubtful.

How long is it since the change from 3185 to 3186?

I predict that they will announce a completely new model at Basel, as they did with the SkyDweller a few years ago.

Id imagine all the movements will be upgraded similar to the DD40, DJ41 and SD43. I think it's most likely to happen when each reference gets a redo though, not just new movements in existing cases.

I think it can be safely said that any remaining 31xx movements will be updated.

There's a fair chance that it could happen next year.

When it happens, it will be announced at Basel, probably.

Paul, Brian...a 2nd generation watchmaker is a Gentleman and a Scholar for sure! I think we can all agree that as time goes on Rolex will no doubt replace the 3135 in its Sub's...DJ etc., as well as the 3186 in the GMT's. as far as when this happens, even Brian would say he's just taking a shot in the dark!

I can't see selling my 2017 BLNR for a newer movement (which would be invisible to the naked eye) but I most definitely would buy it if the new movement was accompanied by a ceramic Coke or Pepsi bezel.
