Opinion on Avenger

I have been buying Rolex, but saw a video of the blue dial Avenger 43 and it looked great. Not much on it on this forum. Any info or advice please.
Thank you

Great watch. In fact the whole Avenger line is awesome. The new 43mm version is very similar to the older 44mm version, but they split the size gap with a 45mm and 43mm. There is also a 48mm Super Avenger.

All these models have a WR of 300m, with a screw down crown but no screw down pushers. They are fairly stiff so unless you really give it a smack while diving this shouldn’t be a problem.

The movement is a base ETA 7750 that’s been reworked by Breitling. Some people turn their nose up at this common movement but Breitling does a great job of making this COSC certified. It’s a very reliable and serviceable movement that can last more than a lifetime with basic maintenance. The chrono function is modular, rather than integrated, so of course it lacks a vertical clutch or column wheel activation, but it’s a workhorse movement that soldiers on through just about anything. If you don’t care that much about the specifics of a movement, it’ll never bother you.

What else can I tell you... typical Breitling, with amazing AR coating on the both sides of the crystal, gives that deep-dish dial a wonderrful 3D appearance, almost as if you could reach inside and touch the hands. The bracelet is the newer version of the venerable 3–link Breitling bracelet that I have always found very comfortable and durable. I wish they would put their sliding micro-adjustment off the OceanRacer clasp on the bracelet, but at least it has microadjustment ability. And if that bothers you, all the Avengers lend themselves very well to just about any strap you want to throw it on.

Can’t think of anything else to tell you. I have had maybe ten different versions of the Avenger lineup over the last 15 years and I’ve loved them all. Great watch with awesome presence for a sport watch.

Post pics if you get one!

Cheers

Ross

Ross,
Thank you so much for the thorough review. I think I will give one a try. They seem like a lot of watch for the money. Closest AD is several hours from my home, but I want to try one on before buying.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Is the crown tube issue resolved? I remember the older version was titanium and a part of the case so if it stripped you were SOL. The 43mm version size looks nice.

The Avenger 43 is a fantastic watch! I bought it last December as soon as it showed up at the boutique, and it has been on my wrist more than any other watch in my collection.

The dimensions look a little large, especially thick, on paper. But on the wrist it is one of the most comfortable watches I’ve ever worn. The case back is nice and flat (not protruding like a Submariner, for example) and it wraps around the wrist very well. Both the bracelet and straps are equally comfortable.

I was purposely seeking a robust chrono with good water resistance and a 7750, because I don’t baby my watches and I like to have them serviced by my local independent watchmaker. The new Avenger was exactly what I was looking for.

Go get it!

My favorite is the Avenger II Chronograph blue dial with silver subdials on polished bracelet. Really good and classy look! Have owned a few and the blue got the most compliments.

What color looks better in your opinion. Blue or Black face with bracelet?

Always thought they looked great but much too massive for me. A lot of the Breitling are like that though.
48mm avenger.... really? Wonder who they sell that too... Stallone, schwarzy would be my guess...

Well, I finally pulled the trigger on the Avenger 43 (Blue dial). Arrived yesterday and I will be having it sized next week. Thanks all (especially Ross for his detailed review) for your opinions! I'll post a photo after it is sized.

Avenger gmt is like 41-42mm. Avenger diver is like 43-44. I think one of the avenger chronos is 43-44 and there js the super avenger which is the big watch you’re discussing.

Yes. This 43mm is the upper limit on my 7" wrist. I mostly wear 40, but my latest purchase was a couple of vintage Rolex DJ's at 36mm and they look and feel awesome.
