YG Submariner as only watch?!
Hi all,
My father is looking to purchase his first Rolex, and he wants a watch that he can wear everyday, in all situations. He is torn between the YG and TT Submariners. On one hand, he prefers the look of the YG. On the other hand, he is worried about the added weight, flashiness, and reduced durability versus TT. It also comes with a hefty price premium. I told him he should go for the YG. The man is 60 years old and has worked hard all his life. However, as a modest and frugal person, he is understandably wondering if it is overkill when the TT seems like the "better" daily watch. Please advise so that I can help my father make the right decision. Thank you so much. |

There is nothing wrong with wearing a gold watch as a daily, I do it every day.
Nobody cares or notice. The heft is amazing, really like the substantial feel of a full gold. Contrary to popular belief I see no difference in wear or scratches between PM, TT and SS. They all scratch the same. I tend to find the TT even more blingy compared to a full gold. After a life of hard work and caring your dad deserves it

Agreed, no issue wearing YG everyday. Plus the PM sub is so much more substantial in every way

I wear a DD in YG and a SS and YG DJ as a daily wearers, I see no less or more scratches on the YG vs SS.. Wear it and enjoy in good health a PM Rolex is not the dainty fragile piece some on here think it is

Please remember that whatever $$$ is spent is really just temporary because many people are able to turn a Rolex into cash years later, and, just depending, for a profit, and, you have had the use of the watch all that time.
In 2016 I bought a 2002 Ferrari 456M GT for $75K and people thought I was nuts. I tell everyone it's just a savings account I get to drive. Get the YG. |

At 60 he's paid his dues and should get the full gold, I'm sure he's not that worried about little marks here and there, only us lot care that much.

I daily wear a YG Sub after previously owning and daily wearing a TT 16613.
Solid gold is much more rewarding to wear and the look is mesmerizing. A two tone watch is just a steel watch with a few gold accents, not the same. |

YG sub is an amazing looking watch. Go for it, the only regret will be not doing it sooner. And as other members have noted it's one of those models that is a better way to enjoy your savings every day rather than looking at a bank statement.

I daily wear a YG sub and previously did the same with a day date. Solid gold absolutely fine for a daily. I owned a 2 tone ceramic bluesy and that's a great daily as well. So no wrong answer here, he should pick what he wants to wear the most.

as the owner of a yellow gold day date, i'll be the contrarian. the gold
sub is beautiful watch, but it's a big slug of yellow metal. i'm not convinced that a modest man would wear it every day. however, if he goes that route, he'll need a stainless steel watch to wear on those days when subtlety is required. |

As an only watch, that would take some beating!
Don’t forget some incoming pics !

I wear gold every single day no issues at all.
He's 60 years old man. Its time to chuck money aside and just enjoy life. If he doesnt buy and enjoy a full gold watch now when will he ever do it? Time to enjoy the rest of his life with a solid gold piece. |

I’ve never been a fan of TT. If you’re going to go gold, go all in IMHO

Yellow gold! It can be a daily. He will enjoy it! Either Black or Blue - wonderful.
We needed pics. PS, I’m 52. I’m enjoying mine now, and the kid can have it when I’m done.

He should get what he wants more. Ignore what “seems like a better daily.” Sounds like the full YG is what he wants. Get it and add something else (Seiko etc) as a “beater” and then the combo may suffice more than one watch being a “daily.”

Let him decide what he wants. My father was my hero and I'm sure you feel the same way. Help him, coach him and advise him but ultimately, he needs to feel exhilarated at owning a Rolex. His decision is all that matters.
But, be forewarned. If he decides he doesn't quite 'bond' with it, PM trade-ins can be very painful financially. Sent from my SM-A520W using Tapatalk |
