This new 40mm DD makes me extremely happy. I always thought the 36 was too small for me and the 41mm too large, as it wears big. 1mm makes a different.

I wish fluted bezel on the platinum model was an option.

So is the 36mm no longer being produced?

I'm somewhat split on the issue, I see both perspectives. Personally, I think the DDII and DJII look best with the smooth bezel, while the DD and DJ look best with the fluted bezel...it's just s little too much on the IIs. The platinum DDII Is simply amazing, but if I were getting WG or YG I'd get the DD

No , the 41mm is finished, the DD36 being the quintessential Rolex watch will stay.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I wonder why they didn't just say the DDII line is changing in the following ways (new size, new dials, new movement, etc).

How can it be a mistake if one chooses to buy it? Something said it was beautiful to them or the just like spending money. As others have noted, it's 1mm different. The shape is not that notable.

That is confirmed, sorry.

DDII will stay on Rolex site and in catalogs until the new catalogs are out, normally this autumn.
Rolex ADs need to sell their remaining stock, so the watch stay visible on various Rolex supports.
It have allways worked this way when a model got discontinued in the past years.

I would rate the decision as follows:

75% to appeal to a massive buying market the Asian population who like a traditional dress watch (ALS did the same dropping the size of their 1815 form 40 to 38.5). They generally have smaller wrist sizes but may want something bigger than a 36mm.
15% the Bezel / case does look a little out of proportion to my eyes and others, as others have said not by much.
10% is knowing like sporting teams changing their home strip each year a certain number of hard core Rolex fans (including MANY on TRF) will buy this new piece as well as the existing. So it will suck that little bit more demand out.

FYI I don't believe anyone who was willing to buy a 41mm would say I would not buy the 40mm, in short it is a ZERO risk decision by Rolex.

Well in that case thanks for the update. It's a shame I really liked the day date II.

Consider yourself lucky if you got your DDII. The size/proportion wasn't for everyone, especially those with tiny wrist, but it does look really great on the wrist shots of people who have them here. It will always be a beautiful Day-Date no matter what and it looks fabulous on many who have them.

Why??

Isn't it always when supply is low, demand will increase accordingly hence driving up the price??

I say keep you DDIIs!

Look at Rolex's "mistakes" in history... All are highly valuable (especially so in collector's market).

I own a couple of DDII (218206) which I LOVE n will NOT let go easily.. I LOVE these new DD40 very much too! I see the DDII n the DD40 are two totally different watches. The DDII more macho n manly while the DD40 more gentlemenly per se.. Both are winners!!

Now.. HAGWE!

Cause they are not sure either. I still see DD2 in Rolex website. I bet they still have inventory for DD2 cases in their factory. It will be a while before DD2 is truly discontinued... or not.

These types of threads are hilarious.

I sure am jealous seeing pictures of peoples mistakes in this thread...I wish I was in a position to make such a 'mistake'
