I don't think the DJII will come down to 40mm next year, that would be lightening fast for Rolex, maybe in the next 3-5 years and with very limited dials at first.

How on earth can you argue that the proportions of this beauty are anything but perfect. DD2 will live on as a desirable timepiece and the fact that they are discontinued only makes them that much more desirable

It personally took me a while to work it out, just what it was that wasn't right.
Then the penny dropped.
Once I could quantify it, then it was easy to pass on it.

At the end of the day they lost me a little bit more after the fiasco of the Maxi Case Sub. Good for rappers.
Bad for anybody else with a sense of style and proportion

Since two new movements have been launched this year - the 3255 and the 3235, these may eventually lead to the phasing out of the current DD2 and DJ2, making them rare commodities!

I don't recall that Rolex raised a size of any watch and then brought it back down .. ever (I would like to hear an example from people with more knowledge than me if I am wrong).. they either raised it or kept it the same, the DJ , submariner, GMT , Daytona , Explorer 1 and 2 all went through it as the time passed but the trend is up even if it stabilizes but never reverses ..

this is the first time they did it .. and yeah they can call it the DD40 but its just a new DD2 with all the "corrections" answered and given the classic proportions am sure it will wear much smaller than the DD2 so in reality it will be much more noticeable than a 1mm and they know it.

as for the new movement having anything to do with it, well the movement has nothing to do with the size of the stick markers or more importantly the bezel and the other more subtle changes

I posted earlier, after more thought, I think what looks off to me is the bezel.
The DD with the smooth bezel looks much more in balance IMO.
But I a fan of the 36mm.

DDII was never a mistake. It was always my someday watch. If I was successful in my mid 30's, I'd of got myself one as a well done.

The DD40 is an improvement though based on what I have seen.

Many DDII owners will rightly be defending their watches. It can't be easy when a supposedly "better" watch comes out. By that I mean better proportions according to some and a better movement according to many.

I hope nobody takes this the wrong way but I sort of get where people come from. I'm getting rid of a DJII when an OP39 comes out with the dial I want. I'm not going to take much of a hit. If I owned a precocious metal watch, I'd be trying really hard to make myself not vastly prefer the DD40 because for most people it's not as simple as flipping the DDII for the DD40. You'd take quite the hit.

If I imagine my someday self saving up for years to get my DDII and the DD40 coming out a year or two lately. I wouldn't of been happy.

Also I think anyone who's saying "it's only 1mm" is being overly simplistic. Compare a 16570 and a 216570 and you'll see what 2mm does.

Either way it would have been easier for Rolex to just put the new movement in the old case size. Would of saved time and energy. There must be a reason they made that change of "only 1mm."

They did not make a mistake with the DD2 they are simply following the evolution of watches becoming larger.

Contrary to what some avid PP lovers here think even Patek released a 42mm watch this year and some 41mm etc.

DD 36mm will eventually be marketed as a women model
DD 40 and 41 are targeted towards the same market, 40 plus....young guys dont care about a day date function..and typically prefer a sportier watch.

Watches are getting bigger, its not a fad its the evolution since they stared out at 20mm for mens watches

I tend to disagree. 36mm will never be marketed as a women model. A preference for sure to some women but not attractive if you ask me. The trend of “I own a big watch” is surley dying out compared to a few years back.

Watches were getting bigger, not anymore though.

41mm DD was not proportionate IMO. It was definitely a BIG bling factor. I do like to dials on the 41mm especially the ice blue roman numerals. SEXY combination. The 36mm is here to stay forever and the 40mm is perfect to represent the classiness and history of rolex.

Now the DJII being 41mm is the perfect size being looked at as a casual/everyday watch. Something tells me they will bring it down to 40mm as well.
