I post this whilst enjoying some 12 year Yamazaki so....YMMV

While totally not mutually exclusive in the least, my buddy made a good point a while back when talking about collectibles vs. investments (watches)
He said that if you notice, the 5513's and such, older daily wear subs are exponentially more expensive than sought after models (daytona's, etc...) and the reason is because these solid built watches which are discontinued are having their prices rise because of entry level desire.
As inflation becomes more of a reality, folks will always want to purchase rolexes, etc...
This will cause watches like the 14060's (as a biased example lol) to rise in price because the price of entry will become higher (as we see it currently with SS models)

Just like the cost of a entry level home pushes first time home buyers to expand their budgets, it would be akin to an "entry level sub" rising in value because they have a wider margin between original cost and inflation.

And we could be blowing all of this out of our holes and be dead wrong!

In my opinion, the only one that has real potential is the SD43, but only if they discontinued the red text. Some variants of the SS Sky-Dweller could too, although I don't know how many are produced and we don't know how long they will be produced for. If we include Tudor, I think the Black Bay Black ETA (79220N) has a shot at being a collectable, as it was popular from the start and made in low numbers.

Even though the SD4K was only produced for 30 months, I don't see it ever being highly sought after, as I just don't think it has any distinguishing characteristics that people could (or do, for that matter) fawn over, besides the short production run. All others (both LVs, BLNR, DJII) could appreciate some, but too many have been made for them to become an icon.

I think there is no way of knowing for sure, but look back at the start of the thread. Almost a year and half ago people were positing that if the Red Text was one year only, to mark the anniversary, it would be a sure fire collectible. Well, the red text stayed, but the Crown appeared to differentiate the dial, and there has been a reasonable amount of chatter about the value of a true MKI dial ever since on these forums and elsewhere.

So, my best guess is that a MKI dial SD43 probably will be pretty collectible one day, as it more or less marks the true anniversary year of the watch (we know dealers still got MKI's in late 2018 but the assumption is they were just clearing old dial inventory). There is no crystal ball for what will or won't be desired in 30 years, but if I had to bet money on it I'd mark the MKI dial down as a future collectible. Just my .02.

New airking. I can’t buy one as the explorer 1 is just nicer to my eyes but the controversial watch tends to go up way down the line. Has odd colors and the dial in general is so controversial I’d think this could be a collectible down the line.

I fully agree with you........here's why........

I believe that the 116680 YM II, being likewise unpopular, will be the hidden gem for Rolex aficionados, collectors and speculators in 10 or so years. Its uncanny how when stuff gets called rare that they become collectible and people want them
I disliked it initially but became attracted by its outstanding appearance more and more......it is a stunning watch when viewed on the wrist.
I've mine for a couple of weeks now and it's by far my favorite watch versus my Explorer II, a classic GMT 1675 and 16610LV's (1x 2007-used; 1x 2007-NOS, in the stickers)
I've been specially searching for an early series "Blue Hands"; being discontinued in 2017.
This Blue Hands SS version is manufactured only during a couple of years in very low quantities.
Imo this BH is the more characteristic one versus the new version with clear "Mercedes" hands.
The 116680 YM II is an outstanding and differentiating Rolex-model among the masses of Submariners.
Time will come that this different solo style will be appreciated by the people which have enough of all the Submariners you spot in cafes and on terraces and are searching for a characteristic Rolex with a once in a lifetime caliber; the only Rolex with a 44 mm case and with the model type description on the bezel/inlay......now commonly unappreciated.....attractive by its distinguishing features soon!

Just checked the prices for an unworn 2018 ,116600, box and papers in Europe....I bought one last year for 10500
On chrono24 there are only a few left... and they start at 13.000 Euros
Not a bad one year increase.
This watch was unloved at the time. Stayed at Ads , going for a discount , short production run... for me this is the safest bets right now.... besides the unobtainable Daytona
