New Year’s Day spent with a tool watch and ice tools

Happy New Year to all Rolex fans. I started the day with some ice climbing In -8F weather in the white mountains of NH. My SD4K performed flawlessly.

If it had been an Oyster Perpetual (Explorer or not), that would have been an even more impressive sight. Nothing wrong with a dive watch though.

Would’ve been a perfect shot if it were a 214270, but this is still good

Thank you. Yes I was thinking that the crowd was a little ornery. I was a little reluctant to take the sd4k ice climbing since there is a lot of swinging he axe into ice. It still has 3 years on warranty so what the hell. It performed well under the cuff. I will go next weekend too.

Yeah you have to be careful if you fall. There is a risk of impaling your chest with the ice picks when you bounce off the ice wall.

Excellent - makes a change from the usual steering wheel & gaudy jewellery shots.

As regards notional suitability, it's still an Oyster Perpetual under all the additional dive features. If anything, it's a tougher, more functional, more versatile choice than an OP or Explorer. So, you're good (not that you should really care).

Great photos, great watch & kudos for testing it in such an environment.

Nice shot. Nice axes, are those the Black Diamond Cobra axes? Wandering why you are using two hammers and not one hammer and one adze?

I climb verticals and low angle ice. No need for an adze. I don’t carve steps into the ice not do make belay ledges. The adze is a bit of an anachronism. Oh the main point it I don’t like taking an adze in the face when removing the tool. I also like the swing weight of a hammer more than an adze.

Yes BD cobra ice tools. Like Rolex they are the best but expensive. I have been using these tools for the last 7 years. My partner uses Petzel Quarks. Excellent too.

It is very cold,-8F no wind though.
My idea of activity with a Rolex is ice climbing. Other people’s’ idea of activity with a Rolex is walking from the chaise lounge chair to the bar to get an umbrella drink.

My cousin was wearing my 30 year old explorer 2 that I gave him a few years ago. Should have taken a pic. Next weekend we will.

There's probably not masses between them, but I do think that in building a watch capable of descending more than a kilometer under the ocean, there are certain intrinsic features that make the older Sea Dweller tougher than an Explorer/Oyster Perpetual:

- Beefier case - circa 15.5mm thick vs. 12mm for Exp
- Crown guard protection (absent on OP & Exp)
- Trip-lock crown vs. Twin-lock (that's two extra seals, and it's larger)
- Thicker sapphire crystal

The Exp/OP's 100m water resistance is realistically plenty enough for almost any likely use required, but the Sea Dweller does of course lead there also, being a dive watch.

The movements of each are very similar, but you could make the case that the OP/Exp actually has the slight edge by virtue of the more modern Rolex 'Paraflex' shock system within, whereas the SD has the older 'Kif' system. Presumably Rolex thinks Paraflex is superior for a reason, but the Kif system is proven & rock-solid, so in real-world use the difference is probably quite marginal.

Playing Devil's Advocate you might also regard the solid steel bezel of an OP/Exp as being more impact-resistant that the Ceramic Sea Dweller insert - the former may bend & dent, but it will remain, whereas the latter is likelier to shatter or detach. However, I don't think the once-feared epidemic of shattered ceramic bezels has really come to pass, and Ceramic will of course better resist scratches than stainless steel, so it has that edge.
