time to ask the obvious about the submariner

Hi Folks,
I'm picking up a 114060 next week at my local AD. I have done my research on this model but one thing I have not figured out, what is the difference between a 5 digits and 6 digits sub? I've looked at pictures of the 14060 and 114060 but can't see the obvious. please educate me and thanks in advance!

Tell me the differences have you found so far in your research and we will try to fill in the rest.

- Super case
--> Thicker lugs
--> Bigger crown guards
- Maxi dial
--> Wider hands
--> Bigger hour markers
- Ceramic bezel
- Solid bracelet links
- Glidelock clasp

I must've missed some stuff too.

The two most obvious differences are the case lugs being much thicker (and some might say less graceful looking), and the bezel has a ceramic insert rather than the anodised aluminium of the 5 digits. That means an insert that will never fade, scratch or generally look old!!

The lume is different, the 114060 has a ceramic bezel while the 14060 has an aluminum bezel insert. The 114060 has a glide lock clasp while the 14060 has the old style micro adjustment clasp. That’s some of the differences. Hope it helps

I was looking at getting a submariner previously. The Major differences seemed to be the fatter lugs and crown guards. The dial being the obvious difference in it being 'maxi' - larger visibly than the previous. The glide lock is definitely another change and advantageous one to say the least. Are you deciding between the two references or is yours a done deal?

if you cant see the difference yourself then you better get the 6 digit one. It has a much modern look, an mproved movement and warranty period of 5 years.

Aha, I think i may have been missing some brain cells due to too much drinking as a teenager! I finally figured it out! 5 digit=14060 and 6 digit=114060 thus the number of numbers in the code......

thanks everybody!

ps, I know all of the differences in the watches themselves, it was the name that you all were using that stumped me.

He might've been hung, drawn and quartered if it had been obvious he was actually asking what the difference is between the number 5 and the number 6

(just joking OP, we all have the occasional brain freeze)

The 5 digit is far more balanced in every way, but if you can’t see t you will be happy with the 6 digit.

Hmmmm.... harsh. But to each their own. One major improvement IMO is the bracelet and clasp on the 6-digit Rolexes. They are much more sturdy feeling, the 5-digit bracelets feel the similar to my 25 year old Swiss Army watch. Functional and in reality work fine, but feel very flimsy compared to the 6-digits.
