RSC says my case frame is corroded
Hi, I took my 5500 to the NY RSC today and they told me the case frame is corroded and the whole case and back would need to be replaced or they wouldn't touch it. The price for all of this was well over 2k. No way am I going to replace the case, ruins the watch in my opinion. Ive worn this watch a bunch in the past few months and its been in heavy rain and has been fine. Here are some pics from the listing from which I bought it from on ebay.. Should show the areas that RSC said were concerning...looked fine to me.. Im thinking of bringing it to my usual independent, Central Watch, to have them work on it.. What do you guys think? Safe to keep wearing it?

Of course it's "safe" to wear it. Perhaps you should think twice about swimming though.
There are a number of competent watchmakers who can fill and re-machine corroded mating surfaces.. Sometimes it is worth this approach; others, a new case may be a solution too.

Well...I've seen and worked on watches that were 1000 times worse than, that that sealed perfectly and passed water test. Phooey on that.
I'll service it. |

As far as Rolex is concerned the case is sub-standard to leave their care but in reality they are giving you a tip, which is, send the watch elsewhere for service.

They must think it won't pass a pressure test. I would have your watchmaker replace the seals and run a pressure test and go from there. If your not going to swim with it I would just wear it and enjoy.

For me, it doesn't need to seal like it did when it was new. As long as it can keep rain and sweat out, thats all I care about. |

Don't worry and for the sake of all that is vintage don't send it to RSC. Get s good local to do it (or contact RWT ;) )

Are the case threads stripped off the back? I said it was a scam for a couple of reasons. First, the corrosion is not bad, it seems minimal. It's totally wearable even if it cannot hold a pressure charge. Maybe not swimproof... but it's a nice watch. I can't see how it is economically justifiable for an AD to propose a $1000 case swap. Maybe a sport model would be worth it. I have minimal trust in AD service counters

hell yea. the case and case back look pretty healthy for a vintage watch and i wouldn't give it a second thought. for sure you could service her up and she will be AOK. from the pics it looks like a nice honest watch. |

Unless that back is completely stripped that watch will pass a water test.
I have absolutely NO doubt that it will pass a water test. 2 things...I'm surprised they will even look at your watch because they just don't do 15xx series watches unless they are in the "classic" tier...which is extremely pricey to start + the case and caseback they want to add....and...second....they must be really hurting for cash to try and clip somebody for what it costs to replace THAT case and caseback or trying to divest themselves of a replacement 5500 case and caseback in their inventory...because to replace that case and caseback...is from a collector standpoint...being that the watch has a limited value anyway...(2k is more than the watch is worth PLUS the 700+ or whatever they are going to charge for the service) and the value will be cut in half because of the replacement serial number. |

I wouldn't spend 2k on a 1.7k watch.
Enjoy it just don't swim in it. |

I still say have it serviced and tested...I'd swim in it in a heartbeat.
