Odd Hangtag Serial Combo
This hang tag came to me in a bag of watch parts that I picked up at a local flea market a few weeks ago. It was the only Rolex related item.
I’m a little baffled though. The serial number on it is R977920. The hang tag is the style you would find in the late 70s. R serials came out in 1987 and this high R serial would put it to around 1989. Was this style hang tag still used up through 1989? Please let me know if you have some insight. Thanks

With the R serial numbers, you'll start to see the rectangular green hang tag without the protruding coronet. On the back of the tag you'll find a sticker with the serial number.
The tag in your photo was used at least up to the 9 million serial numbers and probably overlapped into the R range. Below is an R serial GMT II 16710 green hang tag. (The first year of production)

I realize this is a very old thread but, for the benefit of future searchers, I'll add that my 16713 with R6XXXXX serial has that style tag. |
