Icon5 Ceramic or Aluminum Bezel?

I love the looks of the ceramic bezel on the newer Subs, but I don't know if I want something that's easy to scratch. Which is better, ceramic or the older aluminum?

It my understanding that the Ceramic bezel insert will not scratch as easily but they can break occasionally and then it's costly to replace!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

The ceramic also has a more mirror like finish. It is more reflective.

The ceramic is certainly a tough material, but, like anything else, it'll get damaged if abused. That said, the aluminium bezel is more likely to get scratched in every day use, but cheaper to replace.

They are very scratch resistant, but with that being said they do have a chance to break. With that being said it's about what you feel comfortable with. I prefer the look of the ceramic in the end just can't beat that shine IMO!

Well both function more or less the same although the ceramic is said to be more scratch resistant. But it can get scratched and there have been several reports of it happening plus the insert pearls getting chipped. So IMHO any advantages the ceramics might have over the perfectly functional aluminium is out weighed by the disadvantages. To replace a ceramic insert cost wise is around $450 upward plus its not a DIY job.Now to replace the aluminium insert is a 10 minute DIY job and costs around $75.

Just go with which sings to you.

Many of us like the new modern sub with thick lugs and other upgraded bits. Ceramic is nice but like others said very costly to replace

However

Many of us like the classic sub lines and timeless design. The aluminum is classic looking and costs aroun $100 to replace.

I love the ceramic bezel on the Subs, they look far better than the aluminium ones. For day to day use (light bumps and scrapes), the ceramic will be far more durable but if you're heavy handed with your things, I would stay away as a hard knock at the wrong angle is enough to scratch or crack it (just like any other item that takes a hard knock).

It's not just about bezel, if you want new, updated sub, you have to go ceramic. :) I love mine.

The "breakages" of the Ceramic are far a few. So it's not like they just break if you bump it once and a while. I hard smack on cement maybe.

As far a scratches or fading on the Aluminums....have a 11 Sea Dweller and it used to my "beater" the bezel looks like it did back in 2002. It's not like the high polished Daytona bezel that accumulates scratches very easily.

Try some on and see what you like better on your wrist...either way you can't go wrong

"Better" is all in the mind of the buyer.
I prefer the ceramic bezel for the shine and scratch resistance.

I love the size and shine of the ceramic; however, I do worry about that one costly mistake.

Ceramic blows the Alluminium out of the proverbial water.

Alluminium wins the price war though.

IMO there is no "better". I like both for different reasons and purposes.

My SubC has hit everything from doors, walls, tables, etc.

The ceramic insert has no scratches whatsoever.

I have to admit and it's something I'm not proud of saying, but I do like the look of the new ceramic bezels more - however, I absolutely love the fact the aluminums are easy to swap out (especially for GMTs) and how cheap they are to replace.

I like my ceramic bezel better. To my knowledge its also harder to scratch then the aluminum, mine doesn't have a single scratch on it

I think the ceramic can handle everyday knocks and bumps and still look like the day you bought it. My ceramic insert certainly still looks pristine, (not so the rest of the watch ).

I believe it's in the unlikely event of some planet colliding equivalent misfortune where the bezel gets an almighty whack at the wrong angle that the ceramic can shatter.

Each has pros and cons that have debated dozens of times. I like both for different reasons. One thing I really like about ceramic is the chameleon quality based on lighting. It goes from deep, oily black to iridescent grey; sometimes it shines bright and other times it looks more muted. The best part of the ceramic (Subs at least) is the maxi dial and glidelock bracelet.
