ADs & Greys
I must have seen today on instagram 3 or 4 different greys all selling a trio of S sports models new with stickers, BLNR, LVc, SD43 etc, all on the same day and you'e telling me Ads aren't selling to greys.....
Food for thought |

Probably not ADs now, but rather private flippers, both watch guys and stock guys.

AD could have sold to someone that turned around and sold to a Grey. There is a lot of profiteering going on with the watches you mention.

My local bricks and mortar sources the vast majority of its watches from private flippers

Of course ADs sell to grey dealers. Who said that wasn’t happening?

ADs still do it. A grey dealer I know well has told me what they get from them, which is a steady funnel of LV, BLNR and SS SkyD. Sucks for people on the waitlist at that AD.

AD’s can’t sell over sticker to customers
AD’s CAN sell over sticker to dealers Who would you rather sell to? |

A recurring theme in TRF...but ultimately, it is what it is.
If we could get our hands on it, we would want a discount. AND...we would want it to hold it's value in the secondary market down the road. In essence what we are saying is "give us a watch that anybody can get, without any effort, and at substantial discount that will be hugely desirable and worth an ass load of money." Guess what? It's already happened. I was thinking the other day about some of the deals you could find on TRF when I first joined nine years ago. I could kick myself for the deals that were available back then and what those watches are going for today. But...everything changes, and now it's a new landscape in the wonderful world of watches. I doubt we'll see a return to earlier times. Anyway...I guess we want our cake, to eat it too, and not gain any weight from the calories. |

I think it’s quite different in the various geographies. In the UK and Europe I do believe there’s less, if any, sales of high demand references from ADs to greys. The reason being that if they are caught, they will be in very real danger of being cut loose by Rolex. Losing their Rolex agency is not worth the uplift of selling a few pieces over MRSP. Quite probably been different in the US where the supply position has been nowhere near as bad as it has over here I don’t quite get why people find the concept of individuals buying watches at retail and selling them on to grey resellers such a hard one to accept. It happens all the time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

In some countries in Asia the ADs and even boutiques are allowed to sell for over retail! I found this unbelievable! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

As far as Patek, how do you know it's their fault? Could it be the AD's? Patek has been trying to take steps to eliminate the problem. |

You been living in a cave? This has been going on for almost a year and a half now in case you were still "questioning".

Really, why would anyone doubt ADs selling to Greys? Pretty much a given.

Not sure on that Dee. The S in MSRP stands for Suggested. If they can discount they can charge over MSRP. Would Rolex like it, probably not but I don’t really think they would do anything about it. Maybe Rolex USA would be harder on it but overseas it is a pretty common practice from what I read here. And of course AD’s all over the world sell to gray market dealers. From a business perspective a lot of AD’s need them to move some slow moving merchandise. To get the gray dealer to take the slow movers they have to sell them a fast mover high profit piece every now and again. I was at a Rolex AD a few months ago and saw 6 Rolex boxes stacked up getting shipped out to the same person. Didn’t see what was in the boxes but I bet it was a mix of slow movers and a BLNR or a Daytona or SD43. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Yikes. For those on the board looking to buy watches and putting faith in "trusted sellers" you can't just throw a stink bomb like that out there with no details. If there is a legitimate concern, I would certainly like to hear it.

Don't blow it out of proportion. My issue with him is still not resolved so I won't comment further. He's done hundreds of deals here so I'm sure you'll get what you ordered. I have a personal issue with him.

It’s not just the greys profiting. Browsing through the classified section I am seeing a lot of very low post count sellers of popular models. Seems there are a number of regular people buying from ADs and trying to flip for profit.

I'd always assumed that the big-time gray dealers got their desirable models by also buying the slow moving stuff from the ADs. But looking at some of their websites, there's really not a lot of Datejusts or Day-Dates, so I'm not sure that's the case after all.

Agree that it is probably not the best plan for the average buyer and I am guessing a number just end up selling to greys. Seems a lot of regular buyers are buying watches only to try and flip which further reduces direct sales to people that want to keep. I think greys do buy a number of popular models from ADs but the issue of small supply is from Rolex’s end and not because the greys are buying up all the inventory.
