Both are popular watches.

Found this older thread when I was looking doing a search on this very topic.
Some very informative and intelligent posts, as usual. I have often pondered this same question and ulitmately decided on getting a 16610 LN instead of the 300M. That was before Rolex and Omega upgraded their watches to the current ceramic bezels. It would be interesting to see if anyone put some thought to the current two models of the Submariner Date and the Diver 300M. My knee jerk reaction would be to choose the Submariner Date, but I must admit, the 300M is a beauty. |

I own both and can tell you that while I like the look of the oyster bracelet, the seamaster bracelet is much more comfortable.. Also the bezel on the smp is very hard to use compared to the 16610. It is hard to get a good grip on in comparison

Main difference for me....walk on to an airplane and I'm guessing you'll see no less than a dozen Rolex's...at least half of those will be Submariners. A classic, of course, but jeez...I prefer a watch that isn't identical to everyone else's on the bus. Go Omega...still fairly common but not even close to the ubiquity of a Sub.

I own both. ('66 300m and Maxi V 5513 Sub). Both are great watches and I love how under-the-radar the Omega is.
That said, nothing beats a Sub in my opinion. It's just a flawless watch. |

I agree with pdoukas. go vintage. everybody has a sub, but how many have something unique like a Snowflake or a vintage SM300? the vintage Omega 5xx movement & the vintage ETA movement (finished by Rolex) are as tough & accurate as any modern movement. paraphrasing my Local Rolex trained watch maker: "some modern movements are .2seconds more accurate than the earlier ones. so, who cares?" finally, a good vintage is 1/3 the price as something new. |

Rolex is a Rolex but a Seamaster has cache of its own

Good value yes (more bang for your buck), not sure about love forever though, at least for me . I had 4 omegas before: 2 speedmasters (Moonwatch + Saphire with moon phase) and 2 Seamasters ( 300 m Bond + GMT Seamaster). And even though I appreciate them for what they are, don't feel compel to re-acquire them. So in my case is a "temporary love". Lol But you never know..... Good looking Seamaster by the way !! Cheers ! Sent from the 3 Watches Philosophy Company headquarters

Having had a new ceramic Sub Date since February I had a yearning for a Seamaster 300m ceramic in blue and bought one 4 weeks ago.
The Omega was extremely comfortable on the wrist but I just couldn't get to love it and only wore it once during my brief ownership. Ended up returning it to the place I bought it from within their return period and bought an Air-King instead. It's made me appreciate my 116610LN even more TBH, its a beautiful watch and one that I never tire of just looking at......

The quality and the stats are very comparable, to answer the original question.
However, there is something intangible and magical about the Submariner. It can't be quantified or explained (by me, anyway). And by the way, the core of my collection is three Rolex and three Omega, so I'm not really biased. But still, there's something about a Rolex... |

I own a sub, a 16610 I purchase new in 1996 at a Hong Kong Jewelry shop for $1,700, stopped wearing it years ago when I became passé looking with all the copies, clones, homages and fakes. It's now safely tucked away in a safety deposit box for my oldest boy when I croak.
I also own a Tag Aquaracer WAN 2111 which has more then assuaged my desire for a Seamaster. Both of these watches to me are boring looking, that's why I picked up this gem a month ago, don't see many of these on anyone's wrist, and people notice, and NO one, I mean No one asks me if it's real of not like they do my sub, |

Kind of hard to figure why Omega did that, since the future King of England wears a quartz SMP exclusively?? |

From my perspective the SMP Bond which I have is a great watch. It cost a fraction of the price of a Sub, works just as well, and it is also iconic although admittedly not as much as the Subs. The Sea Masters change frequently and don't really maintain identity other than through the branding where as with the Subs, they all seem to line up much closer to the original genetics of the model.

I have a different version of the SM300 made from NOS Omega parts that I love. I like it even more than my old SD and at a much better price point.

New vs new, I believe that the Planet Ocean is comparable to the Sub (116610). The SMP is not in the same category.

Agreed! The mesh gave me a totally new love for the watch. The OEM bracelet just felt light and cheap and without the fliplock clasp popped open occasionally. Now, it's one of the favorites in my collection.

What brand of mesh did you put on your SMP? Mines a Staib.

Same here. Best on the market that I found. Built solid, but very comfortable.
