If we are talking desk diving then I suppose practical useage would not be a concern to you.
As a diver I agree that the AP is useless in the water - however you can unlock the rotating crown in the water and rotate the internal bezel - seems a little scary though... I had one for a while, never took it diving. Dive with my sub all the time.

I can certainly appreciate the AP but have stuck with my subs for no other reason as I think they look better.
You may also find that the rolex is easier to maintain and service if needed.

If I was a diver (I can't even swim!) I'd choose: neither.

I think the Seadweller is a better choice than the sub or the Royal Oak.

Then again, I have a Planet Ocean 2500, and that is also a fantastic usable diver watch.

AAAAAnnd I have a classic Seiko SKX007. I mean, that is a diver's watch if we are all honest with each other. Even more so when "price is no object". It does its job, no matter what, and doesn't really complain about it.

But I like my 1680 best. Sort of like my Land-Rover and a well worn leather jacket. Quality is not defined by the number of shiny surfaces an object has.

Ive had an AP FC Diver for over 3 years. It has been on over 25 dives and there is not a mark on it so I strongly disagree with your statement

I like both. The AP diver is much more unique than the Sub. I have 1 AP diver and 4 subs.

I think a Sub is a more rugged watch...AP is awesome, more expensive to service, and a bit more delicate .... So depends on your lifestyle... Good luck and no bad option either way!

AP servicing cost is very high compare to submariner. Submariner is a winner here.

Setting an AP diver bezel is tedious by comparison to the submariner and I wouldn't set the AP diver under water.

I'm sure the experience is quite different with the forged carbon vs the SS with regards to scratches.

Sub definitely especially the new ones with a glidelock clasp absolutely genius. Only bad point is I'm not rotating my watches as much as I should as don't find as comfortable without the glidelock

The AP diver is more "haute", not too many people are going to really dive with it. APs are deff more fragile than Rolex watches I can tell you that from experience. And BTW don't get me started on the servicing prices. My Rolex always always always keeps better time than my AP.. I've seen people wear Rolex and not service it for a decade and it was still keeping decently good time. Don't think that would have been the case with the AP. I think in terms of build quality Rolex is and always will be unmatched. That being said the AP diver is one sexy watch though

No diver in their right mind would rely on a mechanical watch these days, they all use dive computers. So the "tool" argument is moot.

The AP is much more desirable, IMO, and I love subs (older ones).
