DayDate good buy?
Hi guys,
Would appreciate a quick opinion on this one. I’ve been after a YG DD for a while now and just saw a ‘76 in a pawn shop for £10K box, papers and 12 months warranty. Their prices on other models seem reasonable (exp 2 for 5 and a GMT for 6). I assume DDs were plexiglass and maybe 36mm back then? Looks okay? TIA. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I do not like where the satin finish has been polished off. Sorry, I would run from this one fast.

Ok thanks guys. Much appreciated! What would be a fair price for this, I’ll see if he’ll come down.

They wouldn’t budge an inch. Chain sag was hopeless and it was just too small for me. Tried on a new YG DD at the AD though (and a Platona) PM is defiantly on the wish list!
Thanks. |

Go DD40! Or keep your eye out for a 18238 118238 on watchrecon if you're looking for YG and 36mm

DD36 was all there was in the 70s. They are a pain to set. I agree; go more modern. Quote:
Pricing isn’t as low as you say, fwiw. Happy to have you show me one that’s mint at $10K. Check out DSW’s pricing. From new maybe. Otherwise, no. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I concur. Will hold out for a nice DD40. Thanks for all the input - it’s worth its weight in gold!

I looked around quite a while to find the one I bought recently. There were plenty of beat ones in that price range but who wants one over polished with the bezel looking more smooth than scalloped. Crisp with a full set and no stretch is desirable. As Bas says below...(and yes I did read it as USD, sorry). Still even looking at that price I'm not seeing any with full set, etc.

Yes, DD2 was 41mm and the proportions weren't ideal. It was only in production for a short while. To me, the bezel was very thick and the watch looked a little awkward Day Date 40 ref is 228238. Here is an example. Rolex got it right with this one. It has updated movement, ceramic sleeves in the bracelet and a few other improvements. Retail is 35 but can be had from trusted sellers for around 28-31. As far as 36mm, 18238 will be cheaper than 118238. Reason being there is more gold in 118238. I'd recommend going for one of these references for quick set. If you can 118238 would be the best if you're trying to stay in 10-15 range. Hope this helps! |

Check out Bob's Watches. He has a bit of a up and down reputation so this is not a recommendation to purchase there, but his website has both his buy and sell price on each watch and his inventory is absolutely huge so you can get a very good idea of pricing for each model and even each year of each model.

If something is 30-35k new and your looking to buy one for 10-15 tell me how that’s going up in value lol....now yes if you get for 10k it might be worth 11k in the future but more than likely 8-9k... day dates all good from the early 80s are even cheaper...

Didn’t you know that TRF is full of investors these days rather than watch enthusiasts?

Here's my newly received with box, manuals, and papers from a trade of my 116600 plus some cash to the seller. Of course you can find everything but papers online if you want. You can get it serviced to provide a supplement for the missing papers as well if those are important to you. Seriously, one doesn't need to be an investor to not want to throw away money. |
