Rolex Oysterdate Precision

Hi all,
Please, let me introduce my vintage Rolex timepiece. It's manual wind Oysterdate Precision with cal. 1225 and I purchased it two weeks ago. The watch is in great condition and really like having it on my wrist. I also must add, that it is my first Rolex (hopefully not last ).

Doesn't look like it has had much wrist time. A great find. I think this is the classic Rolex look.

I am to awake this sleeping thread :). First, I have bought a new camera, so I am posting one new picture just for fun and I have also two questions.

1) Is it possible to get genuine Rolex-made sapphire crystal for this 6694 case? I suppose not, but I want to be sure. In case, that it was not possible, what would you think about buying aftermarket one? I am not sure about going to buy it, because - you know - aftermarket is not genuine...

2) Do the Rolex service centres have equipment for overhauling the WR-elements like crown and gaskets for such old model? Mine was at my watchmaker, who has done a great job at ordinary servicing - cleaning/lubricating, the watch is running great with nice constant -4s/day difference, but renewing the water resistance would be also great thing. And can you estimate the price of this WR-renewing?

All answers are much appreciated!

... and here comes the picture :)

Practically identical to mine (though mine has seen more wear and tear). Very nice clean watch for everyday use, hope you are enjoying wearing it

Sure I am, thank you. Adding one picture from work travell to Barcelona two weeks ago (still the old camera).

No one has any suggestions to my above questions? I know, that the best way to find out is to contact directly the authorised dealer/service, but I wanted to get to know it this rather informal way...

I had mine serviced by a specialist via a local jeweller. This included a new plastic crystal (no idea if this is a genuine one or not, but it's good quality), and pressure testing, total cost was GBP368. I bought my watch originally a few months ago and it was in a pretty sorry state (but then, it was cheap) which is why I wasn't too fussed about having it serviced by Rolex themselves.

Thanks. The watch is much older than me :), it is from 1968 (BTW, very crucial year in our country history).

In regards to making sure it is waterproof, the proper parts from Rolex, are not that expensive. The crystal is in the $60 price range and if the crown and tube are in good shape the watch maker can just replace the two rubber seals, along with the watch back gasket. He may have already done that in the service.

Don't let the prices you see for these original Rolex parts on Ebay make you think they are expensive. I think they are just priced like that on Ebay because you cannot buy them unless you are a watchmaker with a Rolex parts account.

BTW, your watch is in beautiful shape. My first Rolex was a 1989 Oyster Perpetual Date, would probably be the 1989 equivalent to your watch.

Lovely! If yr still on this thread, whats the actual colour of the dial? Silver? I've got a silver/grey dial being fitted to mine (c1967 6694) as we speak.

cheers, chipshop

Icon14 Question

Excuse my lack of knowledge of your great watch. Am looking for a similar one. What is the Rolex Ref. No. of this watch?

Not mine, but undoubtably a ref. 6694.

6694 Servicing

skalis,

I rang the Rolex St James's Square office/service centre when I got mine and they confirmed they still support it. Slightly pricey, though.

cheers, chipshop

This is what i like. The model from rather deep history :) and stil supported. I have contacted one of our ADs and got the answer, that WR overhaul is possible and not that expensive (about 150 USD). The only "trouble" is 2 months waiting time to receive the new crystal, which they don't have in stock.

On tuesday I let my watch to undergo the WR test - unfortunatelly only to WR 30M (I wanted 50M, but the tester was programed only to 30M for watches with acrylic crystals - it was not Rolex service) - ant it passed smoothly. It is >40 years old watch with original crystal, o-rings and gaskets! The durability and robustness of Oyster case construction is something, I really appreciate.

One of our ADs

Skallis,
It seems your ADs have a similar time-frame to ours in London but substantially lower fees. Is it possible to arbitrage the service centre fee & send it abroad? Where is this AD who only charges $150?

cheers, chipshop

PS what is actual colour of yr dial?

It is Carollinum in Prague, try to contact their service centre. The price they told me was approximate, the case polishing (surface finish restoration was not included) was not included.

The dial colour is silver or "metal" and has very smooth radial brush (I also have seen models with up-down+left-right brush, which looked very very beautifull).

Today morning I have taken some more pictures and I am going to make some others now (for our czech watch forum), so I will share here afterwards.

A "very smooth radial brush"....that's a beautifully evocative description. I know exactly what you mean. I've seen those. I've always wondered how to describe them but that's it: a very smooth radial brush. I also like the ones described as "linen", which I suppose - to continue your simile - is "cross brushed".

cheers, chipshop
