How does one get to Richard Mille status?

I’m an avid watch and car collector (seem to go hand in hand). Some of the pieces I own... 5190, 15305OR, Zeitwerk, etc...
Cars are my absolute passion and I will “go for it” with cars....have CGT, Speciale, 16M, MurcieSV, etc.

So here is my real question...how do you guys afford an RM or multiple RM’s? I peruse these and the price of entry is $100k. Well for me, at that point I’m looking at cars. If someone has 3 RM’s that’s darn near a half mil. I’m now looking at a CGT (a bit more) or even a condo, but you get my point.
My cars - some I finance, some I own, some I lease under my Corp.
Is there a creative way to finance a watch of this caliber or am I to plunk down $150k.
I’m not looking for an “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it....”
I realize this is a sensitive subject,
but I’m really curious.

For many it’s a drop in the bucket and for some they are allocating more of their assets to a watch than any man should. That’s life.

If I was even entertaining creative financing, I’d put my money somewhere safer like a Patek 5970 but I’m fake rich.

For the record I don’t have a RM or a RM bank account

I am no expert on creative financing but if I had to guess most just drop the $150K without batting an eye at that level. Judging from your list of cars you seem to be able to run in the RM crowd if you so choose.
As you said, your passion is cars and you put more financially into that then I ever would and some do the same with watches. Although I would guess in the RM crowd that it may not always be a passion for watches and more just ample amounts of money to burn.

Some guys make mid 6 figures and have few fixed expenses... some are making bad financial decisions... Others just have massive amounts of money. What looks like a random troll could always be a major business owner, a major executive, or the spouse/child/grandchild of some big shot.

It's the internet, it takes all comers. Even without an RM I know I had advantages 99% of people never get.

Some are born into RM, some achieve RM and others have RM thrust upon ‘em.

Hopefully not many are overstretching for a timepiece, but to sensibly drop those sorts of sums you’ve surely got to be well set and barely feel the expenditure.

Sounds like at that price point there are other things which grab your fancy even though you have the coin to drop - which is probably a fairly normal response.

I’m sure many finance their purchases, many people live beyond their means. Seams like at least for you it’s just prioritizing your purchases, if you sold your cars and watches you could likely pick up some RM watches.

Just to state the obvious people who have loads of RM watches are likely very wealthy (or at least want to appear as such). Just because you and I would rather spend $1,000,000 on a nice condo, doesn’t mean someone else would just spend everything they make and more on clothes and watches.

there are companies that will let you borrow $ against the equity of a watch at a high interest rate if you ship it to them for safe keeping.

i digress as to how much RM is a status symbol now.. i liked it better when no one knew what it was, prices werent as crazy, and it was just a cool watch

Some people may not be so much into cars. They may prefer to own RMs and take a bus. Different strokes for different folks.

one gets to "Richard Mille Status" simply by gathering up lots of money. at that point good taste and common sense for some may fly out the window.

Seems it’s the next logical step for you. Although if you have to ask about financing a watch, maybe it’s not quite the right time.

RM just seems to look like a child’s toy to me, but I have seen exceptions.

i agree. however in the watch arena in this day and age with all the mega-expensive stuff put out by respected watch houses it's hard for someone from across the room to notice you dropped huge sums for a watch unless it visually stands out which i suspect is part of the RM attraction for some.

there are actually quite a few of them in our locale but we only came across one that was tempting for us price-wise. can't recall the model but it looked similar to the ones always pictured, tonneau shaped and colorful dial. the foreigner owner ran a bunch of pok-pok (girly) bars in town and some other questionable enterprises and seemed to have gotten himself behind the 8-ball and needed to raise cash. he was willing to sell it for a song but we shied away from it due to it's sordid owner history. when i say song i'm talking asking $12k and desperate. last i heard he still has it. not our cup of tea. i suspect stuff like that is inflated on the internet but boots on the ground watch hunting will turn some of them up cheap.

I take the bus to work every day and am happy to buy toothpaste on special offer if it liberates more money for the finer things in life. Ticked the silly car box a long time ago and moved on due to an inability to use them properly where I now live, and now watches (and to a smaller extent AV) are my only indulgences. As Ben says different strokes for different folks.

Priorities and planning.

For me it started with a major watch consolidation.

So I went to a car show today and one of my friends has this cool RM matching his SVJ. He has 3 RM’s and an insane car collection.

I'm trying to become an IG model/influencer, but seems now many people want to follow a fat old white guy so I can afford a RM.
