Mysterious Cell Towers?

Popular Science has reported that a special Android phone with high-security features has identified fake cell phone towers that are capable of hacking cell phones and controlling them, all without the knowledge of the user.

No one seems to know who owns the towers or who controls them or even exactly what they're up to.

Quite a few of these are positioned in the DC area and also around military installations.

It's certainly an interesting development.

Keep looking and you'll find maps where they have been located so far (there's an app for that).

Good info piece if you're going to make an outbound call while in the grip of a rogue tower.

A couple of things to know for anyone worried about it:
1) calls that are already in progress on a bona fide tower will not "handoff" to the rogue one. The rogue is not part of the signaling network that your carrier uses to decide which cell gets your call next as you traverse the geography.
2) Rogues can't handle incoming calls to your phone for same reason.

But it is possible for a new outgoing call to be snagged by one of these baddies.

I believe we'll see some improved baseband control software standards but that's the whole problem with ubiquitous networking. Anyone can replicate the standards in their own rogue cell. Also, the new $3500 super secure phones are only pinging when they pass "run of the mill" rogues. They work just fine when they come into contact with really good rogues

The odd part to me is not what these towers do, but why no one can figure out whom they belong to.

You don't just build things in this country without having to do a lot of paperwork and paying a bunch of fees and all of this, I do believe, is supposed to be in the public domain.

The US government can tap into anything at any time already so not sure what the motivation and investment would achieve with a new program like this. If anything it might be a private and highly secure network for government use only. There are a lot of players in the field looking for intel from many different sides.

Pretty odd that no one knows who owns them. Has to be the US Government. If it wasn't don't you think they would have had them removed immediately once the existence of these towers came to light?

I never left the land line. If I have to call the bank or there is an emergency I know it will work. Besides, there are so few landlines I doubt they would make the effort unless you were specifically known.

As has been said, No Such Agency does not need towers, they have satellites. They would also not target military installations with towers. I would think is a foreign government, maybe China. jmho

I see some of these in the area where we live - cellphone antennas disguised as trees (pic from web not mine):

But then i see lots of other trees and even woods and forests but how can I be sure that these are real trees not just lots of better-disguised cellphone antennas?

Maybe I should ask the squirrels?

Once the cute little squirrel makes a pretty little home high up in one of these tree-lke towers, it's not before long that a raccoon comes along to have himself a squirrel bacon sandwhich for lunch.
