My first Rolex, now a gift for my father.
Normally we see watches as heirlooms. "Horological craftsmanship" shaped from different materials whether precious or not. Items that we can proudly wear or store away and "pass" on to the next generation...that is if it's not sold for some reason or another.
Now, before you praise me for doing something noble, please do not! In fact, I bought my first Rolex for selfish reasons. I have always been fascinated by watches. Having been self-employed from 2004, my first Swiss watch was an entry-level Tag Heuer Formula 1. Rookie purchase I know, because the ignorant part of me couldn't tell the difference between a quartz and a mechanical movement. When Apple released its first generation SS Apple watch, I was up at midnight being one of the first to purchase. I thought it would cool my interest in Swiss watches...I couldn't be any more wrong. My first Apple Watch eventually died from water damage and I purchased a second SS Apple Watch. I have now turned my back on smartwatches and researched on mechanical watches once again.(Funny how things go full circle) I have since purchased an Omega Speedmaster Pro Moonwatch (manual wind) from the AD here, who is also the AD for Rolex. He told me that Hulks(116610LV) would be coming by the end of the month and asked if I had wanted one. I went home and did more research on Rolex watches and realized how prized Stainless Steel models were and how much value they have on the resale market. Now, my Dad has never been the type to spoil himself. An Immigrant and a minority in a third world country, He worked hard for what he has, whilst instilling values and morale to his three children. His "investment" was his children and has no substantial financial investment. I would be lying if I told you my first intention was to not flip this said watch. The most selfless thing I can do now is to actually show my appreciation to the decades of values and details my dad has instilled in my life and gift him the same representation as in this Rolex watch. Perhaps the "Hulk" represents his strength as a minority and resilience to oppression. Ultimately, it will be His belated Birthday and an early Fathers Day Gift. There is a youtube video, where Wei Koh from Revolution Watch interviews "the legend" Jean-Claude Biver about mechanical watches at BaselWorld 2018. Biver could not have said it better "... you have the choice to buy accuracy with battery (or) you can buy the fantasy of a mechanical movement. Accuracy with a battery is due to one day become obsolete. The fantasy of a mechanical movement, it is due to become eternal! Eternity has no competition! If you buy a quartz watch, then one day you gonna throw it away... who wants to buy obsolescence? Nobody! We all need eternity! We all need to be linked to Eternity!..." We can all learn from people like Biver and for me, personally, My Dad. |
