Konstantin Chaykin Clown Watch

So I have an an opportunity to put down a 50% deposit on the Konstantin Chaykin Clown Watch. Delivery in Fall 2018

What’s attractive about the opportunity is it a limited edition (of 27 pieces) from an up and coming independent and a whimsical piece at that. Missing the opportunity now might mean missing it forever. At $9,990 it seems a fair price.
The previous 99 piece Chaykin Joker sells for a little below double of its original retail of $7,500.

Hesitation is it eats into my watch fund (with which I have been wanting to buy a Hublot Spirit of Big Bang or an AP ROO - a bit of a weekend, sport, in your face watch) AND takes a space from my watch box (limited by my wife’s patience)

Thoughts?

I find the watch very interesting, an innovative. I love how he reimagined the moonphase.
Price seemed reasonable and Chaykin already has another watch coming out priced over $60k, so may be opportunity to get an independent watch at a fairly reasonable price.

Drawbacks, I believe this uses an ETA for the base movement, so some people may frown at that.

Then I thought, what are people going to think if I have a clown on my wrist? Just not sure if I could pull that off.

I did think it would look a bit strange on the wrist, but then there also watches like Urwerk and MB&F Horological Machine that look outlandish as well.

So a smiling Clown - may not be that bad after all.

My concern is “When will I wear it?” Not sure it will go with a suit at work on weekdays.

Weekends are for bigger/ dive / sport watches.

So ..?

Based on your thoughts and circumstances I would not buy it. I also would not buy the Hublot. Funds will be better spent on a ROO.

The Hublot Spirit of Big Bang will not be retail - through the grey channels that is about 30% below retail. The draw for me is the tonneau shape, the wrist presence and the Zenith El Primero Movement. While I get the usual take against Hublot, they have been slowly and steadily upping their watch making cred.

I have been lusting for a ROO for many years. While that lust has dwindled a bit, it’s still there.
The AP ROO seems to be hugely over priced and still milking the iconic design.
For that price, the chronograph movement is not in house and I have been reading about a lot of quality issues TRF members have had.

The big draw for the Chaykin Clown is the fact that if I miss it now - I can’t it later on. (At least at this price)

While the above three are on my current hit list - clearly each have their shortcomings.
Hence the post.

Clearly I know there is no 1 answer to my question, I was hoping for some opinions and thoughts being thrown in.

I'm a big fan, I met Konstantin a little while back (below is a picture of his personal Joker on my wrist) and liked the guy and what he is doing.

I see the Joker and the Clown (I ordered one a while back, so you now know what I think) as something fun. I don't think it's a weekend watch as you describe like the AP or the Hublot and if I didn't have one of those or something to fit that spot in the collection I wouldn't be thinking about the Clown.

In terms of wearability it's a large watch, so yes it won't be a work suit type thing and definitely more of a casual watch in terms of size alone. For me this a weekend / very casual type watch which I think I will wear a few times a month maybe.

As for value, I'm not sure I see a premium valuation in the future. I have nothing to base this on aside from 1) it's not exactly cheap for what it is and 2) the number of potential buyers is really limited (as I don't think the average buyer for this watch is seeing this as number 2 or 3 or even 5 in a collection).

If my nemesis was a serious man who dressed up as a bat, maybe I’d wear it.
Or maybe if I were a jovial Russian hit man...

It’s funky, weird and unique - and I mean all those as compliments. I’d go for it.

I actually really like this design, if budget was not an issue I would buy it just for the sake of it.

Its less scary that i thought. Its more 1990 Pennywise vs 2017 Pennywise.

There is also going to be a titanium joker version of 188pc so I am not sure where prices will go. Price for titanium is slightly lower than this one.

Could be a good investment.
But I'm not a gambler.
I'd rather safe up for The ROO.

I'd take that over a ROO or a Hublot any day personally.

I have decided to let go of this opportunity to buy the Clown Watch for now.

While the watch is attractive in the interpretation of the time and moon-phase and Konstantin Chaykin is an excellent independent - I wasn’t sure when I would get to wear this watch and wasn’t sure if I was willing to spend USD 10K on a whimsical piece which I may wear not very often.

I would have done the same thing. Speculation is one thing, but its better to speculate on watches you like. I don't think its very wearable so it would probably become a safe queen.

I wouldn't wear a watch like this. Neither would i allow it to take up space on my watch box. However, if you are positive the value will go up then it is up to you. Will you wear it? Or is it purely on investment grounds?
