Was there ever a time when PM was generally more desirable than SS?

Nope. SS was the most accessible to the people. These days things are a bit different but I can never see a point where PM was more popular.

I just do not think there will be or ever was a time where a more expensive version of a product is hotter than the lesser version with the same specs. I would not be surprised though if the current market for Rolex has them doing higher numbers in PM pieces more than they ever have.

I think a solid gold Daytona has way more prestige than my SS and would happily trade anyone.

Thanks for the input, which begs the question, if you want Rolex for as much of a status symbol as a great watch, would you take the time to hunt for multiple SS sports pieces to wear on rotation or just pull the trigger on a solid gold piece, the latter of which is available instantly? In today's market, I think someone would rather have a sub, pepsi, and batman on rotation than a single solid gold daytona.

The word “prestige” he used is very subjective. I think perhaps you misunderstood his intention for the word.

Yeah that's what I did in the end. 3 SS models via TS here for about $44,500, half of that being the 116500. I tried the sub and SD43 and ended up sticking with DJ41, GMT2, and Daytona. In rotation they are very diverse... someday I may trade the DJ toward a day date.

Nice collection. I'm with you on the day date. Had a DJ 41 then sold it. Missing the classic simplicity of the DJ but would go for a day date rather than another DJ.

SS is only more desirable here in fantasy land. Ask a real human which is more desirable, a gold watch or one made from the same stuff as the fork in his kitchen. SS more popular because it's cheaper.

Tend to agree. And even around here, if you were to ask people if they'd rather have the steel sub or gold sub, most would say gold. Only thing is, the SS sub is just more accessible at its price point.

For me, I'd take a steel sub to a gold one. And though I can afford a gold daytona, I'd much rather have the SS (but I won't pay today's ridiculous premium). I find precious metal too blingy. Fashion-wise, in 2020, I think the look of SS is far, far more popular than PM.
