depreciation planet ocean
I was wondering, based on pure interess how much the planet-ocean omega watches are depreciating from new price? I mean only full sets. I mean the reference nr 21530442101002 in 43.5mm aswell as the 39.5 version. What can you expect to get ''back'' from the msrp when you decide to sell it?

Omega does not hold their value like Rolex, so you should expect to take a loss..minimally another 15-20% off MSRP depending on what type of discount you received at original time of purchase.

I won't buy it in any way without 20 procent discount from the ad... But after that i also expect a lot of loss, i am wondering how much i would loose after that 20 procent off.. I like the watch a bit,, but very unsure about it wheter to purchase later on or not..

I wouldn’t buy a non-limited production model Omega for anywhere less than 25% off, which means you’re basically limited to grey market. I bought my PO GMT 43.5mm from the grey market at 43% off MSRP a few years ago, and if I sold it now I’d still lose $1000 on it. I’m fine with that level of depreciation, but if I’d paid MSRP I’d lose almost $4500.
If you’re looking to avoid losing a lot of money when you sell, my advice with respect to non-limited edition Omegas (or most watches other than Rolex and Patek, really), buy used, or buy grey. That said, buying watches just to avoid losing money when you sell is not a great way to enjoy this hobby. The best advice is to buy what you like and enjoy what you buy. It’s a great watch, btw. My brother bought a PO new & asked me to sell it for him after 3 years. Newer ceramic bezel & 99.9% as new. Not a mark on it. Weekends (sometimes & special occasions) wear only. Must have had it on a eBay numerous times & we eventually sold it for 45% under mrrp. If it had’t been The 45.5 size - i’d have taken it myself.
The discounts on offer or the 0% finance deals in uk certainly make preused a less attractive option |

You’re going to take a pretty good hit, since it’s a popular watch and there are plenty of them on the market. The gray market sort of sets the ceiling, since few people are willing to pay more for a used watch than a brand new gray market watch of the same make and model. There are exceptions, of course. PO Master Chronometers are around 32-35% off on the gray market, so figure at least that much.

I have had a situation with a breitling wich i didn't like at all.. Bought it with 20% off,, sold it with a 60 procent loss in 2 years time, bought it new.. I do not want to have situations like this anymore offcourse, but now i m more into the grey market so that might be a better option, i think after all i would buy a slightly used like new one with about 40 procent off than) with b&p than the burning won't b to muchh of a hit!!

The only PO that really held value was the 42mm Liquid Metal LE with the 2500 movement.

The market is hard to predict anyway, who thought everyone would be so much after the white dial snoopy. The good thing for Volvo is they only produce 73 pieces and I believe it has been sold out already. There was one sold at chrono24 recently at a bit over the list recently and it got sold quite quickly. So lets see

I’ve owned a couple of Omegas as well as Rolexes Breitlings, PAMs, AP and Pateks. Rolex, AP & Patek will hold good value and you may even make money if you buy the right ones and buy them right. The others you can pretty much expect to sell them for 1/2 of what you paid even with a decent discount on the initial purchase if you buy new.
You need to keep in mind that the wholesale cost of these are somewhere in the neighborhood of 50% of MSRP. So a dealer can buy the $8,000 Breitling for $4,000. It’s hard to compete with that when you try to sell to an informed buyer. I broke even with my AP Jumbo and made a little on my Sub LV. My advice is to buy what you like understanding the cost of ownership is depreciation and the eventual servicing. It costs the same to service a PM Rolex Sub as it does a SS version. That’s my argument for owning PM pieces. The cost of ownership is less as a percentage of the initial costs!

Good point, but depreciation is normally much higher on the PM pieces (compare SS Rolex vs TT or PM Rolex, for example), although unlike the SS models you can get them with a discount.

Great watch. Buy pre-owned and that depreciation becomes your friend.

If you bought the first generation release of the PO (especially if at a discount) you would actually be ahead of the game.

No one really answered the OP's original question, so I will.
The depreciation of Omega is overblown; people are comparing second hand prices against MSRP, which basically no one aside from the boutiques will ever charge you. If you buy it pre-owned, you will hardly lose anything. Using the 39.5mm Planet Ocean as an example (215.30.40.20.03.001), the model with the steel bracelet, it MSRPs for $6,550. Nobody pays that of course. If you get a 25% discount from an authorized dealer (AD), that's $4,912. From grey markets outfits like Jomashop, it goes for about $500 less but you won't have the Omega factory warranty (only the useless Jomashop warranty). On the second-hand market, they go for around $4,100 in excellent condition. I bought mine pre-owned for about $4,000 more than a year ago from a guy on this forum, it was an AD purchase originally (full warranty) and it hasn't really lost any value. So bottom line, if you buy from the AD at maximum discount, you'll take about a $1,000 haircut if you tried to sell it. A little less from grey market, but smart buyers who are already shopping near the price bottom are more likely to holdout for an AD-purchased piece that has the full factory warranty. Or obviously, buy pre-owned and it will retain its value. |

I bought my 40mm PO brandnew when it just came out, paid about $2300 (I think) wore it daily for 10 years, finally had it serviced locally when it started to lose time. Love it and IMO it's better made than my 5-digit sub LV. I think I can sell it for what I paid for it but decide to keep for life as it has been with me to many places.
I'd love to get a PO Good Planet one of these days with in-house movement. |
