Anyone else paid over retail for 116500...like me?

One month ago I paid about US$18,000 for a preowned black 116500 and just about a week ago, I also purchased a preowned 116509 for slightly more, after receiving the 116509 and wearing it for almost a week, i have found that I am slightly regretting that I have actually paid so much over retail for a watch that cost so much lesser brand new and is still in production , I understand that I can flip it right now and actually not losing much money on it, The watch is a beauty in both photos and in person, but is it actually worth so much hype?

As long as you are happy, that’s all that matters. Plus you can’t just walk in and pick one up at retail.... nice watches btw

As much as I want to pick up a 116500LN, I refuse to pay over retail.

We all take different approaches. I’m in the never pay over retail camp. Our situations are all different (incomes levels, patience level, AD relationships etc). All that matters really is what works for you.

Only you can truly decide if it's "worth it."

As has been said before, it's intangible - do you get the satisfaction out of these pieces that you were looking for? None of us can answer that for you. I do think they are great looking watches though

Only you can decide if it's worth it but for me, it's a big no. I don't see how a 12k watch sells for at or almost 20k....that's absurd. You are at AP RO money at that point which is a superior timepiece in every single way. But to each their own.

That white gold with the black racing dial is something special, possibly my favourite Daytona along with the slate grey.

Enjoy them both, it’s only money.

if you worry about re sale value or what you paid for it, dont buy it.

Anything material is always jacked up over 100x what its worth.

Just like everything else, nothing is worth what people claim it is until you sell the item.

A stainless steel watch is not worth over 10k even if its Patek. Unless you buying tourbillion.

Youre paying a premium for a name and hype

I have the 116520 which I bought it at the right time at the right price. Is the 116500 any better despite the ceramic bezel? I hardly think so. In fact i prefer the SS bezel much better and this one will never leave my collection.

Once it’s on your wrist, what’s the sense in stressing about it? At this point you bought it because you wanted it, now that you’ve got it you should enjoy it

I paid 14,500 last May for a black dial. Was able to get a white dial at retail and sold for 14,500 last June. Now it would go for 18k. No one can see the future. Get what you like and will wear and enjoy...

Look on the positive side, you are able to have discretionary income to purchase it. That in itself should make you feel good . Now just look forward, wear it, enjoy it and be happy.

I've never paid more than MSRP for any of my watches and it includes really hard to get pieces, but recently I paid $19000 for a 116500 white face. And I'm happy I did. I waited for a long time and still not sure when I'd get one from an AD. So I decided to bite the bullet. I don't really care if I make or lose money on it. But I'm loving it. It's a gorgeous watch. You can rationalize anything, but at the end of the day I'm very happy.

I am a bit confused with the narrative. Your subject line reads in part: "has anyone paid over retail like you", but then you conclude with "is it actually worth so much hype"? Obviously it (the hype) was to you, you paid for it.

Are you going thru buyers remorse? Don´t. You appear to read as a knowledgeable buyer. The watches look fabulous, out of billions of souls on planet earth , you are a lucky individual, that owns those two pieces.

I am in the process of acquiring one via the grey makret and the prices have only gone up.

In Canada, I can’t even get on a darned waiting list. Figured if I need to buy a few PM’s just to get on this fabled list I may as well pay a premium and get the SS.

Looks like demand will outstrip supply by a few more years at minimum so it won’t be much easier for some time now. I was tempted to get a 116509 with the blue dial, or even the WG Submariner.

Which do you prefer? 509 or the 500?

You're buying a luxury watch not a casino, luxury items are always over priced.

One thing is paying the ROLEX luxury overprice, I am ok with that, like any other luxury item

Everyone knows you are paying for the brand and exclusivity

A totally diferent thing is bitting into the hype of the AD and grey market overprice and flipping game, that is just non sence, no one should fall for that or pay over retail

How can you pay 20k for a Pepsi, if you can get Rose gold daytona oyster flex bnib at the AD for 24K Any day

Or a brand new TT GMT or blusey for 13K Any day

Just ridiculous

And yes, i do like the pepsi, so dont get me wrong

The AP is superior in every single way? How about reliability? Water resistance? Durability? Cost of service?

The RO is an amazing and spectacular watch. But I wouldn’t trade my Daytona for it.

Wow you sold the white dial for 14.5? Other party really scored. I had a guy offer me 18k cash for my black dial today.

OP: Both pieces are magnificent. Some times as owners we don’t realize what we have. Enjoy and wear those watches proudly.

That's the spirit It wasn't meant as an attack, but my honest opinion. I'm glad you didn't take it personal like some members on here If we can't express our own personal liking, then what's the point of creating a thread right? Good luck. By the way, Daytona blows away all other models.... The fact you have two...is awesome! But the 166500 blows away the other dial though :)

No regret at all. I paid well over retail price as well and feel happy doing so, as price keeps on climbing up steadily. I would regret only and if I start observing market price goes down in comparison to what I paid.
