Oh boy! I hope none of my Rolexes see the picture of the one resting on an Oriental rug. They'll be jealous. They might become ticked off and demand that I buy them one each, and little umbrellas, and hire them a butler.

Can you tell me how you can accurately gauge that a watch has lost or gained 1 or 2 seconds a day ?

By looking at the dial.

It will fluctuate by position, as has been expressed above. If you really want to find out what position allows it to run with the least variation; take it to a good local watchmaker and have it put on a timing machine. Get a printout of the results for your reference. I do this annually with all my watches, just to make sure the lube is not drying up.

Crown up. My watch runs fast and this seems to slow it down.

You're right, a few seconds here and there are not really a big deal. That said, it's a good idea (IMHO) to check your watch against official time on occasion to make sure nothing weird is happening.

Mine is 21 years old, hasn't been serviced in 10 years, and if worn constantly, it might lose/gain a minute per month (roughly).

I leave my Rolex lying on its side crown down just for the simple reason to avoid scratches to the cases. I don't leave my watches lying face up lying on the bracelet also to avoid scratches.

I wear my watch 24/7 (except when showering and a few other activities) I have 4 automatics and three are in a winder if not on my wrist. I find wearing a watch 24/7 it keeps excellent time.

my Sub-C is on my wrist 24/7 with the exeption of an hour a day to exercise. I wind the crown to a full 40 every month when I reset the date. I've owned the Sub for almost 6 months and I still have yet to observe a change in seconds greater or less than 4 seconds. Not sure if this is the norm but I thinks it's unbelievable.

Hello,

I am brand new to the forum, and am/was very excited to be purchasing my first Rolex next week (a submariner).
This post has me nervous and perplexed.
According to these posts, my watch will not be keeping accurate time??????

That bums me out.

I would appreciate any elaboration that would ease my mind, as I have been saving up for a long time to make this purchase.

Thanks in advance.

I love to wear mine, nothing against those that don't sleep with theirs, but like my ring it is an extension of me

Crown up embedded in a nice big chunk of blu-tac.
Mine gains far too many seconds a day at the moment to call itself a COSC (about 10-15 seconds per day = NEEDS SERVICE BADLY) and that position kind of brings it back to zero by morning time.

Pretty sure the wear is increased in this position (just listen to the strained ticking/ chiming/ hammering - it's a Sub) but like I say - it's going off to the elves in Switzerland in the next few months for a well over due service and they'll sort it out, the cheeky pointy eared geniuses of watchmaking.

On its back. But after GMT entered my life, it has stayed on my wrist for the last 14 days or so!

Welcome to TRF. Relax. All Rolex watches have certified movements with acceptable variations! What can not be cured needs to be endured! This is so true about mechanical watches.

I keep mine on most of the time, and wear it over-night. It seems to be gaining approx 1 to 2 seconds a day. I can live with that!
