That was either his "thesis" project when graduating watchmaking school or the watch he made for Rolex after graduating before starting his own company. Love Franck (I have a 8880 10th Anniversary Casablanca)...

If Franck drilled an Oyster case for the PC pushers as depicted then his judgement shows a huge blind spot.
BTW, the movement including that layout has been available in China as a Sea-Gull.

Have to agree and also would doubt if made by Franck Muller.

If Muller did have anything to do with that, it wouldn't be the first time that a fledgling designer took an existing product, modified it, and used the results to launch a career.
There is one designer of things which cannot be mentioned here who built an empire by having done just such a thing.

I'm sorry, but I'm sure I've seen that watch on a beach in Thailand for 10 bucks!

Quote from another website about Rolex:
"There have always been fables about the projects Rolex decided not to do. For example, it decided not to pursue George Daniels’ Co-Axial escapement; it consciously decided not to use silicon parts despite being the very first brand to experiment with silicon in extensive tests utilizing all configurations of escapement components, including silicon monobloc anchors with integrated pallets; it decided not to use the blade-driven constant-force escapement now adopted by Girard-Perregaux (known in GP parlance as the Constant Escapement); it also decided not to industrialize a perpetual calendar that a young Franck Muller once built and showed them." It could be possible that this was indeed something FM built. Cannot find a whole lot of other resources on the topic.

Old thread but for all the doubters. It is a real Rolex modified by Mr Muller and he gave it to a friend. Story is that it only took him a day to do it. I'll link the article.

the watch is well-known and legit.
On a related note, we featured a similar oddity in our book "Rolex, The Best of Time", "Dowling & Hess", by Antoine Preziuso. I visited Preziuso's studio a few years back and almost forgot about it. During the tour, I saw an old steel and gold datejust in pieces on his bench and asked if he was now repairing Rolexes and we talked about the one in my book. As to the steel datejust on his desk? It was his dads. His dad asked him to clean it as it was running poorly. As a kindness (and a cool surprise/joke), Antoine not only was going to clean it but was turning it into a perpetual calendar. I am surprised about the negativity from long-time members.
The existence of this particular watch is well known (Alford78 posted the link), if you google Franck Muller Rolex Perpetual Calendar, you'll find this particular watch. The watch is for sale here: http://www.orologioinc.com/rolex-qui...yg-in-nyc.html and has been discussed on TRF already: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=320982 I am not sure, if Muller at that time worked for Rolex, but I know that he restored plenty of the watches and clocks from the Rolex museum. |
