New Daytona

I got a very special gift from my father yesterday evening celebrating a milestone in my life. I have seen this watch on his wrist on special occasions, and he bought it new maybe 15 years ago. Papers are lost but I dont care really - this one will stay.

I don’t know that much about Daytonas - is this a resonable ”good” version? Not the latest movement - are there something to have in mind with these? According to my father it was serviced a year ago…

Great watch. I would ask your dad if at least the service papers were available? That would go a long way to mitigate the missing warranty paper.

If not, you (or your dad) could contact the RSC if they could provide you with a copy.

Congrats,

That is a fine example of a reference 116520, I had and wore daily the exact same version from 2004-2008. It has the Rolex inhouse movement 4130 which is known for its robustness, accuracy, and long power reserve.
Congrats, wear it often.

Huge congrats. That is one of the most admired, revered, desired, and well-regarded watches in the Rolex pantheon. It's a sporty, elegant, handsome piece. Congrats on your milestone, congrats to your Dad, and I hope you thoroughly cherish and enjoy this remarkable watch!

Sorry @Tallbark

It's actually not a good version.

It's the best version of any Rolex ever made. Because it's from your Father.

Wear it often and in the best of spirits!

That is an amazing gift, and hopefully one that can be handed down to the next generation. It is an absolute classic, and will be forever.

You have the 116520, which is now 2 generations old. It was introduced around the year 2000, ran until 2016. The 116520 houses the in house Rolex 4130 movement, which at the time (and currently) an excellent movement with much less parts than it's predecessor (which was made by Zenith) and it is also a super reliable workhorse.

From 2000 to 2016, very few changes were made: New style clasp in 2009/10, slight changes to the movement, and a couple of dial font changes here and there. After 2016 through 2023, the only main difference on the black dial version was the addition of a ceramic bezel.

As of April '23, the new generation of Daytonas were announced, and should be shipping over the next couple of months.

Congrats! That is an incredible gift, valued “priceless” to you, but around $20k to the rest of us. The movement as a few have said is the venerable 4130, which was Rolex’s first in house chronograph, which was so incredibly well made that it lasted from 2000 through 2023, when it was announced to be replaced by the 4131 (Daytona 12650x or 12651x models) and 4132 (LeMans 126529), which as minor upgrades, adding new shocks and chronergy escapement, but retaining the 72 hour power reserve rating.

If calibrated correctly, your watch should be keeping track of time within +/- 2 seconds per day.

Your Daytona is waterproof to 100 meters, but keep your crowns screwed down on the center crown and chronograph pushers while around water.

The 116520 is one of the world’s most iconic and highly sought after watch, which was always incredibly hard to buy from an AD at retail pricing, always commanding much higher prices on the secondary market.

The great thing about the black dial version is that it flies under the radar with few noticing it, but even so, just be aware of your surroundings when wearing it because thieves will notice it and because of its value would gladly take it from you, which would be tragic.

Enjoy it!

I would definitely follow up with your Dad to find out where and when it was serviced. If at an RSC, they might be able to provide you a copy of the invoice, but unlikely the warranty card. Also, he might recall where he bought it if the original owner, only so you know it’s provenance.
