1016 Hierarchy

In terms of desirability/value, what's the hierarchy for 1016s?
Gilt? Matte? Mark X? Types? Frog Legs? L Serials?? Other????

Gilt, early, good dial and hands and no polish, better a 6150 frankly if you have coin. Of course. OTOH mine has a service dial, Sub hands, a movement my watchmaker literally guffawed upon opening before overhauling including a replacement rotor of all things, and a beat-to-heck (not really bad is what I mean eh) but still OK case. And all that said I still like it best out of all my watches as a daily. The 1016 is to me very close to the ideal watch.

But if you want one to wear as a daily, I'd say look for the latest version which was IIRC "R" Serial from the 80s? Best of both worlds, there, the old look on a fairly new watch, only 30 years old maybe! And finding a good gilt now is, as you've seen from the forums, eye-wateringly expensive and fraught with anxiety over possibly buying something with undisclosed repaired, replaced, or even outright fake elements to the watch which would affect the resale.

Assuming all condition is equal:
1. Gilt Chapter Ring
2. Gilt
3. Early Matte dial with rivet bracelet
4. Late R or L serial
5. Regular matte dial

That's what I've come to observe in terms of prices. This is a very loosely based ranking and obviously patina can influence this to a large degree.

As Pete said, good gilt dials have become extremely expensive.

What years are considered early matte?

A good gilt 1016 is still much less expensive than a comparable gilt 1675 or 5513. I think they are still reasonably good value. If you can find one...
