The other day I got a call from an AD I never even bought anything from offering me a SD43!! Because I left my name down for a ss Daytona!!

Hate to admit it since I bought 2 Rolexes in last 4 months, but ramping down for the new movement makes most sense. They’re clearing up inventory with all the recent incomings.

Rolex produces the most luxury watches in the world.

They can definitely cut back on production,

-then demand will increase substantially

-more exclusivity

-large price increase will happen

-all watches will be sold without discount

I have a good relationship with my Ad and last time I went there , the Rolex rep was there working on an order and I had the chance to chat a bit with him , he even explained me how they place the orders, they make wish lists and they don't know what Rolex will ship until the shipment is ready to leave Switzerland , at least that's what he told me, again this was the Rolex rep not an AD employee.In that conversation he mentioned something about Rolex and SS professional supply for the upcoming months, I though it was the mentioned shortage every AD was suffering , but now with these news , makes sense, and I'm talking about an AD on where the manager has become a friend and he has helped me get desired pieces , iMO with Basel very close this must a move into new models , but I can be wrong, I just hope it's for the best .

Now I just need to get a BLNR or Blue Skydweller soon:)

Controlling the supply, controls the demand, which gives them the power to price. I don’t think the emphasis on punishing greys is true.

My guess is they’re retooling for new movements/models. It would also be perfect timing for the dreaded price increase. Gonna be an exciting Basel!

It seems Rolex values brand much more than immediate sales. They could easily sell more watches.
I doubt there will be big news at Basel this year as that is not their way either.
Unlike most companies, they seem to take the long view and it seems to work for them so far, even though it upsets a very small subset of their customers.

There's an interesting article in Watchtime 8/2017 about sales and China's impact on Swiss watch sales. In it they talk about overproduction across the board for Swiss watch companies and that they are cutting back production, buying back inventory, etc to have supply meet demand. They also talk about the gray market being used as a dumping ground for excess inventory and how the Swiss don't like that, obvioiusly.

We don't have clear sales numbers for Rolex, but if the industry as a whole is awash with inventory, chances are Rolex is feeling the pain as well and need to do something about it. It's easy to think in our own little TRF bubble that sales are booming and they need to increase production, but who knows?

It would only make sense if there is a major change across the board.....even PM models. No need to produce what’s being phased out....seems a little unbelievable....but who knows...maybe it’s all about a price increase soon....

Could have do with the future of retail sales. Not that retail is going away but how we shop for products certainly has changed over the last few years and will continue. Brick and Mortar stores continue to decline. Rolex certainly is aware of this. Their distribution network will definitely get smaller as time goes on. We all know Rolex does not allow their AD’s sell online. Many believe its to preserve the image and prestige of the product line. Could be? It certainly preserves their ability to control online sales when the time comes for a primarily online distribution system. Limiting production and availability to AD’s will squeeze many to stop carrying the line. The profit margins are to narrow to justify the high cost of high end retail space. Especially if they can’t even get the inventory to sell. Would Rolex open 100 company owned boutiques where people can go demo the watches. Then the consumer can order online? After all how many people use AD’s right now as demonstration centers. Go to the AD, check out the watch, walk out the door and order it online in the gray market.

I’ve heard many times here that AD’s work off a 30% markup. That’s not enough to survive the future of brick and mortar stores.

Or maybe there’s a dozen other scenarios. Would anyone have believed 10 years ago that people would drop $90k on a electric car sold at the shopping mall? Would people forgo the AD experience? They may not have a choice. Who knows? Oh, Rolex knows.

Im actually in the market for a Moonwatch. Omega seems like good value at this point and don't have to go on a waiting list.

Rolex boutiques are still just independent AD's unlike most other brands who own and operate their mono brand stores. These AD's just don't sell other brands. Or are you suggesting Rolex get into the retail business?
