Icon5 Is my 3-watch collection complete?

My "collection" is quite minimal: I only own 3 watches, one of them barely qualifying as watch. Each of them serves a clear purpose for me though:
  • Apple Watch is my fitness watch. I wear it every time I do a workout or a long outdoor walk as I love the statistics and records it provides.
  • Rolex Sea-Dweller is my day-to-day watch, and by far the one I wear the most. I absolutely love how solid it feels while still being very elegant.
  • A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase. My favorite dress watch and personal holy grail.

I’m quite passionate about watches and there are a few references I’d love to add to my collection, but I’m having a hard time justifying a new watch as I don’t see how it’d fit in my daily routine. I wear the 3 watches above regularly as they all serve a different purpose, but any additional watch would be just that — an additional "toy" with no clear goal.

I don’t necessarily need a rational justification to purchase ~useless things I like, but I’m curious how you guys deal with larger collections than this. Do you simply accept the idea that you own very expensive objects that you rarely/never use?

Sorry but I prefer to think of the Apple as a computer for your wrist. Much like my Garmin. Displaying time is secondary. Think you have one more to go. But your other two are very nice indeed. A perfect pair. .

Is my 3-watch collection complete?

Absolutely.

I often think that all I really need is a Submariner, Datejust, Apple Watch and a G-Shock.

You can't go wrong with this collection. Only thing I could think of is adding something under-the-radar-yet-mechanical.

e.g. For those times when you go abroad to places where you don't want to rely on the battery hungry Apple Watch, and where it might be uncomfortable to wear any of your high-end mechanicals.

Think of a Casio, Seiko 5, Tudor, or something else low-key-yet-fun.

Well, only you can really be the judge of that, I think! But the tough-as-nails SD and that gorgeous Lange would certainly satisfy me! Personally I don´t like Apple watches (nothing against Apple, I´ve been using Macs and iPhones for years) and would have bought some G-Shock instead, but that´s just my 5¢! Don´t bother with what others say, buy what watches you like and enjoy them!

I thought the size of a watch collection was always n+1. But that’s certainly a perfect combination.

Welcome to the forum Michael, that’s a great trio indeed

I ask myself the same question all the time. I’d like to get down to a three piece collection. I kind of think that would be the sweet spot for me.

Wow - bases are fully covered, IMHO.

Anything more would certainly be a fun, but unnecessary addition. And I hope you don't let my comment slow you down in making those additions...

GShock was the one i'd say is missing here. That's supporting a very specific space, and one that none of the above watches could handle....or one that you'd want them to handle.

if you feel your collection is complete, you are right......but if you are here to ask the question, you might as well grow your collection

here are some thoughts to further your collection,
do you travel a lot, you can add GMT-Master......
do you time things, you can add Daytona....
do you appreciate complication and calendar watches, you can add Patek or A Lange Sohne annual or perpetual calendar....

Current collection: 1) Rolex Submariner(116610LV), 2) Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional(311.30.42.30.01.006), 3) Rolex GMT-Master II(126710BLNR), 4) Breitling B01 Navitimer 43(AB0138211B1A1)

I have about 25 watches right now, but that's a total aberration. I decided to just stop playing the "this or that" or "what if" game and just buy a ton of watches I like and see what I really actually enjoy wearing and slowly pare it down. So that's how I justify a big collection now, knowing that it's temporary and probably a worthwhile exercise long-term.

Having said that, and I am biased like most others here probably, but a Rolex is probably a bit of a collection killer. Esp something like the SD like you have, or the Sub, GMT, etc. If I get a Rolex in my collection, it always ends up winning the wrist time game. Sometimes by quite a bit. They look great, are easy to wear, hold value pretty well, functional, durable, reliable, etc. What more could you want?

And then you have an ALS, which is probably a dress watch collection killer. Those are so beautiful front AND back, hard to imagine me wanting to pick up another dress watch if I had one.

So I totally understand where you are coming from and I think you are on the right track. Maybe upgrade your AW to an Ultra so you can skip the G-Shock?

Personally I'm trying to get down to about 3-5, believe it or not. A watch that hasn't been worn a lot and embedded with memories is not worthwhile, imo.

Someone once said that a poem is never finished; they are simply abandoned.

I see collections like that.

You've got a very nice trio of watches, but only until you see the next "must have."

Good luck.
