Are AD's a decent place to "trade up?"

Easiest to deal with so price is the worst, that's the trade off.

Just like most questions, the answer is that it depends.
Does your AD have a used section on display? Do they carry used at all? This will give you the answer to your question. Years ago, my primary AD carried used but not on display. Nowadays they have a few more so they have a section carved out in a corner for used. If the AD is willing to carry and deal in used watches, there’s a chance they’ll give you a fair trade. Especially if you’re a long term customer and the other variables are right. If we’re talking about a Rolex boutique or very “retail” type location, you’re probably going to get lowballed like many other posters said. The high end boutique type ADs don’t want the trouble and inconvenience of dealing in used watches and will wholesale them out, resulting in a worse deal for you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

What the others have said. But to add: Best to find somebody to trade with that has what you want. That gives them to ability to clear a piece of inventory presumably at a profit as well as bring yours in at hopefully a bit less profit.
I recently tired of my 2019 Explorer and offered it to 2 TSers. Clearly they were looking to make closse to a couple of thousand dollars on the buy and sell. Then I found a TSer that had the 2018 Bluesy I wanted. Was easy to make a deal. Even considering the tax I paid I got an offer that was very close to what I paid net of the tax and picked up the Bluesy. I presume the seller made the same $1500-2000 on the transaction but did it over 2 watches. And the Explorer was gone from the Seller's website at $500 over MSRP in 3 days. |

A lot depends on who you end up selling your watch to. Some people can be absolute nightmares and so the premium you achieve may be well earned.

Sure you can use eBay, but you'll be paying $700 for the pleasure (max final value fee) and there's a strong chance you'll have to deal with some nonsense from the seller after the sale, i.e. "it runs 3.5 seconds fast" or "I looked at it under a loupe..." |
