Totally unexpected 5811 incoming!

So, I’ve been basically bashing Patek’s releases from 2020 till now (3 different fonts for numbers on the 5226 and others), metallic salmon dial not as nice as enamel, Louis Vuitton Damier-inspired patterns, wrong font and spelling (missing a “.” in Tiffany & Co.) on the case back of the 5711 Tiffany….

I’ve not kept these opinions to myself, telling my sales associate all of the things I dislike, and she agreed with my opinions too (well, perhaps she was too polite to say I’m wrong). So I haven’t bought any of the 2020-2022 new releases.

The only watches I bought since 2020 were two watches they could not sell in the first half of 2020 - a 5196R and a 5396G (with borders to Mainland China and international tourists closed off). I also got a few friends to help buy some of their unsold watches to help them out. My AD is not a big chain store, and it was clear they were suffering.

So when the new 5811 was released, I casually indicated my interest, saying that it’s the only watch released since 2020 that I would buy. I knew my chances were zero, having not purchased anything for 2+ years. Living in Hong Kong, there are lots of big collectors and surely they would get the 5811, not me.

A few days before Christmas, I got a WhatsApp from my sales associate, saying “Merry Christmas” and attaching a photo. I saw the notification but I was busy, so I didn’t look at it until several hours later. I assumed it was one of those junk WhatsApp messages people forward around.

It was a total shock when I saw a photo of the double sealed 5811, with my name on it! So I messaged her back, and picked it up a few days ago. Still in shock and still very surprised that they allocated me the 5811. The whole purchase was a bit embarrassing actually, as I didn’t feel like I deserved the watch and some of the other sales associates were looking at me …

Congratulations. Looks great on your wrist. I'm sure they had their reasons as to why you were deserving of this allocation. Helping them move some sitting inventory during trying times probably did wonders for the relationship.

Enjoy the new beauty in the best of health!

It’s very nice to see a genuine person be properly recognized, instead of going off of purchase history. The fact that you were discerning and appropriately selective instead of buying indiscriminately I think also makes a positive impression.
Congratulations on a great piece.

Don't think so much, the AD obviously thought you deserved it otherwise she wouldn't have messaged you. Congrats!

Nice to hear of stories where ADs still value attributes other than spending history.

Congratulations and wear in good health, and Happy New Year incoming!

Given your collection and overall spend history it sounds expected. I’d be a bit bothered if I was you and it didn’t happen.

How is that nice collection of yours in 2023? Can you give an update? The spreadsheet was a nice touch. Are you still as excited as you were or not? I was going to say you should give some thought to either collecting something other than timepieces or go the other direction, charitable giving. Or take up an exotic hobby like getting a helicopter license…and a helicopter!

My collection is different. 5 Speedy’s, 2 MoonSwatches, 2 Rolex’s, 2 Pateks, and a Panerai. Of those only the Speedy 321 is unworn because I just love keeping it spotless. Or I’m a little undecided? The 3570.5 my son now wears. I’ve sold a Speedy, ALS, and two IWCs. I’m waiting to see how the economy goes before growing it further.

Congrats!

Lmao I understand shocked feeling. You do deserve it OP if transfer history is to be considered. Well it fits the wrist perfectly and congratulations on your purchase.

Awesome, you most likely deserved it. And I agree that it was their only 2022 release that piqued my interest (mostly for going back to a monobloc construction). Now they have to make one in steel...

Thank you all! I’m still very surprised I got allocated this watch.

In Hong Kong, there are 11 Patek stores, and some of them are run by big chains. From what I know, allocations of the 5811 and other highly sought after models, the decision on allocation is made by the local Patek representative in Hong Kong based on nominations made by the AD.

I wouldn’t say I deserved the 5811 but I guess the Patek local representative felt I was a suitable client. It’s beautiful but a bit flashy, so I’ll keep it in the safe for now.

Congrats! Your total spend is certainly may not be enough to get the 5811 in SG unless you are a superstar influencer. Always love it when real watch enthusiasts get the watch!
