Rolex for 5167A

Hello Gents and Happy New Year! I wanted to pick the brains of some 5167A owners. I am thinking of trading in no date sub and a hulk for the aquanaut. Was hoping you could provide your opinions on this. I haven't been able to spend any time with the aquanaut and want to know how you like it

Welcome to the forum

I would think you’ll have to throw in a considerable amount of cash on top of the two watches. I’d keep the Submariner and sell the LVC since it’ll bring you the most money.

Aside from that, I’ve never owned a 5167 but I’ve had a few on my wrist … it’s a totally different wearing watch to the Rolex professionals. You also have to like rubber straps

Thanks for the welcome Brian!
Yes I would certainly have to throw some money on top of the two watches, which I am ok with. I have a couple other 6 digits (GMT and Daytona) and find that they all wear too similar to each other. I feel like I have 4 of the same watches, color and function aside lol. That's why the 5167 caught my eye... it would add some nice variety.

I think it’s a great decision, but that’s because I personally like the Aquanaut line-up due to its casual nature with the rubber strap. It’s also “less” attention grabbing than an all-green 116610LV (but Aquanaut these days ain’t that low profile anymore…). The only downside is its price. On the secondary market, it’s pricing is NUTS and 50k can get one a nice WG oysterflex Daytona with change to spare.

I've had a no date sub and currently own a 5167a. The 5167a is super comfortable to wear and so lightweight (I have it on the rubber strap). It's super slim in terms of thickness too. I absolutely love it and wouldn't ever part with it. I wear it all the time! The dial is incredible and looks different shades in different lights and has an exhibition case back. I agree with the comment above that it's less attention grabbing than say a Hulk but these days although it's definitely an understated watch the way of the world now would indicate it's not low profile these days. In terms of trading you'd have to add £ on top even trading both. The fact the 5167a is my favourite watch, I would also say it's a good decision but that's just my opinion and obviously you should do what is right for you. :)

Welcome!

I bought my 5167A in 2012 after trading in my AP Royal Oak and 16610LV.

At first I had huge buyers remorse, the watch was light and unsubstantial compared to those two, and I put a big scratch in the bezel on the second day of ownership!

Selling it without taking a huge financial hit was not possible in those days so I hung onto it and wore it sparingly. And then one day, I just got it. The watch is magnificent because it is so different to everything else. It is comfortable, discreet, more rugged than people give them credit for.

Good luck in your decision!

It will be a much lighter watch on a rubber strap. Different from what you would be trading. It is comfortable and very legible. Good move if you like the watch and the cash difference is not too high.

I feel like I had a similar experience, very underwhelmed when I first got the watch but after about 6 months wearing it now and then it’s become the watch with the most wrist time by far. There is something very special about the 5167.

I own the Sub LV and the 5167. I love them both but I would not make the trade you are thinking of. Whilst the 5167 is a fantastic watch, no way is it worth that much (imo), and you will get so much joy from the variety.

I did a similar thing a few years ago, got a 5167 in trade for a 3 Rolex steel sports, at the time the Aquanaut was £25k from a grey dealer. I did really enjoy the watch but ultimately for me I enjoyed the variation I had with my Rolex so a few months later traded it for a 116500 White dial and a Hulk with some cash my way.

I love the aquanaut. I traded some pieces for the 5167 and wore it a lot. That said, it was so light and thin I wanted something with a bit more wrist presence so I traded the 5167 and picked up the 5164. Haven’t looked back.

If you can bear it maybe add in the GMT as well to your trade and go for 5164A which in my opinion is the best Aquanaut.

I would, no doubt about.

It certainly is a step up in feel and experience, and I really love submariners, but if it's between those two and a aqua? You won't regret it.

No way
5167a is over priced at retail
I would not trade 2 rolex for one let alone add $ to it

I have a 5167 and whilst its a joy to wear because of the fit, I’ve fallen out of love with it since I purchased by 50th anniversary royal oak chrono. Completely different watches I know, but the 5167 just doesnt do it for me…The 5164 on the other hand is a beauty…

Take the deal....Aquanaut is much lighter and more comfortable and one of the nicest watches on the market.

It’s an extremely different watch.

5167 is very thin and light, it’s like it’s not even there. Mine also has a loud rotor you can hear easily.

Hulk is one of the first watches I ever sold, I prefer the GMT case and complication to Submariners, so for me I would definitely do the trade and then consider getting a GMT at a later time.

No denying these are lovely watches, almost the perfect watch for whatever you need to do, especially the 5164a. But these are already priced pretty aggressively at retail for a steel watch on rubber.

Obviously something is worth what people are prepared to pay, god only knows who was paying nearly 80k for these (5167) last year, but the prices are falling hard.

I suspect they may keep falling and settle around 2019/20 levels, so another 10k on where they are now.

So this all comes down to wether or not you are comfortable to fund the difference, those 2 on trade or sell will probably get you just over half way maybe, on a well priced one.

Great watch, steel, rubber time only, hard to justify the 50k GBP asking price, but nevertheless, fantastic watch.

Good news, this is where I expect them to get to, 35-40k seems to be a realistic target with the final sale price 5% below that list. 10% if you are lucky.

This.

You're keeping some of your Rolexes. You'll like the Aquanaut a lot for the reasons others said.

no one has asked this but how much money on top are you looking at? $20k, maybe. Anything above is a no.

Thank you all for your opinions. A little update on this thread - I decided not to go ahead with this deal.

The AD that I was working ended up proposing the following, and I could not make sense of it:

- Pay full MSRP retail price + trade in my 114060,116610LV & 126710BLRO
