Buying 2nd hand.....
Question from a newbe.
With all the excellent Rolex copies being made ($1-2k versions), how do you know for sure the watch you just paid for is 100% genuine? Will the average watchmaker be able to tell for sure or does the watch have to be sent to a Rolex dealer to be absolutely certain? I ask because 3 out of the 4 appraisers I spoke to have stopped appraising Rolexes because of so many accurate copies available today...even when provided with the watch, original box and documentation. Thanks in advance. |

Any qualified service technician will be able to tell.

Documentation does not provide proof of authentication; the documents, too, must be authenticated.

Stick with known reputable sellers. Plenty of them around.

Hopefully you would've done your due-diligence prior to paying as well. If you are currently looking, you can post any potential contenders here for members to give you feedback on. I suppose that depends on one's definition of "average" there. For an experienced watchmaker who works on Rolex watches routinely, it should be very easy to authenticate one, IMO. |

EXACTLY CORRECT
What he says above - not all "watchmakers" have a clue what makes a ROLEX a ROLEX. Post here prior to laying out money or a trusted seller A

Actually I picked up my first Rolex yesterday. I bought it from my band mate's father who bought it new and rarely put it on.
It's an Explorer 2 42mm (black, my favorite) in beautiful condition along with the original box and documentation. The band was taken off when he bought it and a leather strap put on. The bracelet is in mint condition. I paid 6K. |

And did your bandmate’s Dad buy it from an official Rolex Dealer? Or another place? What happened with the 16613 you were going to buy earlier? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
