Painting a dial?

I saw this on Instagram, from creodesignwatches

To me, it looks good. But, what say the others on the forum?

Does this make the Rolex worth more or less?

I'm thinking less, but curious about your opinions.

Painting a dial?

Would result in the dial being after market. If you ever went to sell it, this could be used against you.

I think the picture you posted is actually awesome although I’d never have it done to my watch

I agree 100%. I think it's pretty cool, but I couldn't do it to a Rolex.

It wouldn’t be aftermarket, if it’s a modified original part, but you would likely lose resale value in the WIS market since it’s no longer original design. In the common market it’s hard to say whether this would hurt you. Someone may be willing to pay a premium for this dial art, but the question is whether the premium would offset the cost of the respray.

If a famous artist did the painting then I'd think it would add value. Other than that I think it will detract from value and appeal to a small number of buyers. It doesn't look bad, but it isn't for me.

To me that looks like an accidental mistake droplet of paint got onto the dial and the watchmaker decided... "What the hell... let's see how creative I can be..."

Although it's not my style, I think the owner will likely want to sell at a premium (and may get it).

As a general idea, making a unique dial like, for a reference/dial that isn't really rare is kind of a neat idea.
